Mastercard extended warranty: Do I get this perk?
Certain issuers may offer it with Mastercard products.
Extended warranties can provide reimbursement in the event of product failure. While Mastercard doesn’t list extended warranties as an automatic benefit with its Standard, World or World Elite cards, certain issuers may offer the feature with their Mastercard products.
How to use Mastercard extended warranties
Follow these steps to activate and use Mastercard extended warranties:
- Make your purchase entirely with your Mastercard or your card’s rewards program.
- In the event of product failure, report it by calling 800-MASTERCARD within 60 days. A representative will give you further instructions, including where to return your claim form.
- Within 180 days of the product failure, return the claim form along with other required information.
While this is a common Mastercard policy, your card issuer may have different rules. You may also need to call a different number to reach your benefit administrator — like for Citi cards, for example.
Check your card’s guide to benefits for this information. If you don’t have the guide to benefits, call the support number on the back of your card.
What to include with your claim
Besides your claim form, Mastercard may ask you to submit the following information:
- Receipt for your purchase.
- Statement showing you made the purchase with your Mastercard or eligible rewards program.
- Original US manufacturer warranty, or if applicable, additional warranties.
- Itemized repair estimate from a provider authorized by the original factory.
- Other documentation the benefit administrator asks from you.
Mastercard extended warranty policy
Your Mastercard policy doubles an eligible item’s original warranty for a maximum of 24 months. It applies only if the original warranty is 24 months or less. The maximum reimbursement you can receive is the lesser of $10,000 or the amount you charged to your Mastercard.
Items ineligible for extended warranties
While Mastercard extended warranties apply widely, they only cover some items. Here are examples of exclusions:
- Used items
- Antique items
- Collectible items
- Floor models that don’t have original warranties
- Motorized vehicles, such as boats, aircraft, motorcycles and automobiles
- Permanently installed fixtures, items or structures
- Plants, shrubs, pets, animals, perishables and consumables
- Professional services
- Media with music or stored data
- Shipping, delivery or transportation charges
- Exclusions listed in the original warranty
- Interest or conversion fees
There are also certain instances in which extended warranties don’t apply — for example, mechanical failure due to lack of maintenance, physical damage to the item and natural disasters.

Who gets to use Mastercard extended warranties?
You’re eligible for extended warranties if you buy a new item with your Mastercard or through the card’s rewards program — and if the item has an original warranty of 24 months or less.
Mastercard doesn’t list extended warranties as a normal benefit with its Standard, World or World Elite cards. However, it does offer the benefit with select cards depending on the issuer. Card issuers may also offer Mastercard products with the feature, even if it may not be administered by Mastercard.
