Our verdict

Swagbucks is a legit, long-running rewards site with plenty of ways to earn, but its $10 bonus requires a purchase and PayPal cash-outs cost extra.

Swagbucks is a get-paid-to (GPT) rewards website and app run by Prodege, LLC. You earn points called SB for surveys, cashback shopping, offers, games and more, and every 100 SB equals $1 in rewards. Swagbucks has paid $708,292,697 to members, according to its homepage.
The variety is the main draw. The catch is in the fine print: the advertised $10 welcome bonus is 1,000 SB you get only after spending at least $25 at a Swagbucks Shop store within 30 days of signing up. PayPal rewards also cost 30 SB more than their face value to cover PayPal's fees. Swagbucks itself says it's for extra rewards in your free time, not to replace your income.

Best for: Online shoppers who'd buy through a cashback portal anyway and don't mind gift cards instead of cash.

Pros

  • Surveys, shopping, games and receipts in one account
  • Cash back at 1,500+ retailers
  • Gift cards at face value: 100 SB per $1
  • Free to join with no waiting period

Cons

  • $10 bonus requires a $25+ purchase
  • PayPal costs an extra 30 SB per cash-out
  • Cash back depends on last-click tracking
  • Most surveys pay just $1–$3
  • Many BBB reviews report bans right before cash-out

Is Swagbucks legit?

Yes, Swagbucks is a working rewards platform with a named operator and a long payout record. Prodege, LLC holds the copyright on swagbucks.com and owns the Swagbucks trademarks, according to the site’s footer. Swagbucks says it has paid $708,292,697 to members, has 10 million members and sees more than 7,000 gift cards redeemed every day.

That said, legit doesn’t mean problem-free. Consumers filed more than 2,700 complaints against Prodege with the BBB over its three-year reporting period, and many recent reviews describe accounts closed right around cash-out.

What makes Swagbucks shine?

  • Lots of ways to earn. You can earn SB by shopping, answering surveys and polls, trying offers, searching the web, playing games and watching videos.
  • Big cashback network. Swagbucks lists 1,500+ retailers you can earn cash back from. Its homepage shows rates of up to 16% at The Home Depot and up to 10% at Amazon and Nike. Macy’s and Sephora each pay 8%.
  • More than online shopping. You can also earn on groceries at Walmart, Target, Costco, Kroger and Rite Aid by snapping a photo of your receipt, get up to 15% cash back on gift card purchases and earn cash back at participating restaurants.
  • Gift cards at face value. A $25 Amazon, Walmart or Apple gift card costs 2,500 SB, and so does a $25 Virtual Prepaid Mastercard.
  • Start earning right away. There’s no waiting period, approval process or purchase required to start earning, according to its homepage FAQ.

Where Swagbucks falls short

  • The $10 bonus isn’t free money. You have to activate it in the Swag Ups section of your account, spend at least $25 at a store featured in Swagbucks Shop and earn at least 25 SB on that purchase, all within 30 days of registering. MyGiftCardsPlus.com and travel purchases don’t count.
  • PayPal costs you extra. Every PayPal reward costs 30 SB more than its face value, so a $25 PayPal payment costs 2,530 SB. Swagbucks says the extra covers the fees PayPal charges it.
  • Cashback rates can change any time. Rates for each store and product category can change at any time, and a crossed-out “was X%” rate isn’t necessarily the most recent or most common rate for that store, according to its Advertising Disclosure.
  • Some game rewards involve spending. Swagbucks says you can earn SB by making in-game purchases through its partners at GSN, while its own free games pay out randomly.
  • Cash-out minimums don’t line up. Swagbucks’ own FAQs say you can cash out once you have enough for a $1 Amazon gift card and that the PayPal minimum is $5. But its $5 PayPal reward page said that reward wasn’t available when we checked, and the lowest rewards we could confirm in its store were $15 options, including a $15 PayPal payment for 1,530 SB.
  • Account closures around cash-out. A recurring complaint in recent BBB and Trustpilot reviews: members say Swagbucks suspended or deactivated their accounts when they tried to redeem, sometimes right after completing identity verification, and that they lost their unredeemed SB.
  • Your data gets shared. Its Google Play listing says the app may share location and personal info with third parties. Its App Store listing says Prodege may use your purchases, location, identifiers, usage data and sensitive info to track you across other companies’ apps and websites, and that the app may use your location even when it isn’t open.

How to sign up for Swagbucks

  1. Go to swagbucks.com or download the Swagbucks app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Sign up with Google, Apple or your email.
  3. Use the same email as your PayPal account if you plan to cash out to PayPal, since Swagbucks sends PayPal payments to the account tied to your Swagbucks email.
  4. Activate the welcome bonus in Swag Ups before you shop if you want the 1,000 SB.
  5. Pick a survey, shopping deal, offer or game and start earning SB right away.

How do you earn money on Swagbucks?

Here are the main ways to earn, according to Swagbucks’ How it Works page:

  • Shop. Earn SB for every dollar you spend at 1,500+ online retailers, plus cash back on groceries (by snapping a receipt), gift card purchases and dining out at participating restaurants.
  • Answer surveys and polls. Most surveys pay around 100–300 SB. You can also earn for answering the daily poll and playing daily live trivia.
  • Discover offers. Earn SB for signing up for new services, trying free samples and checking out deals from brands.
  • Search the web. Earn SB when you search using Swagbucks’ Yahoo!-powered search engine.
  • Play games. Earn SB for in-game purchases through partners at GSN, or play Swagbucks’ own free games and earn at random.
  • Watch videos. Swagbucks lists watching videos as another way to earn SB.

Tips to get more out of Swagbucks

  • Read each store’s Special Terms. Some stores and product categories don’t earn cash back, and rates can change at any time, per Swagbucks’ Advertising Disclosure.
  • Know what the extension pop-up means. If you arrive at a store through another cashback site and then activate Swagbucks’ extension, you’re giving Swagbucks the “last click” — and the other site likely won’t get credit.
  • Pick gift cards over PayPal. Gift cards cost their face value in SB, while PayPal costs an extra 30 SB each time.
  • Save up for bigger PayPal payments. The 30 SB fee is flat, so it eats less of a $100 payment than a $15 one.
  • Activate the bonus before you buy. The 1,000 SB welcome bonus only counts if you activate it in Swag Ups first and finish your $25+ purchase within 30 days.
  • Match your PayPal details. Use the same email and the exact name on your PayPal account, and claim PayPal funds within 30 days.

Keep in mind that the BBB figures cover Prodege, LLC, which also runs InboxDollars, MyPoints and other rewards brands, not Swagbucks alone.

Positive reviews say Swagbucks is a flexible way to earn in your spare time, with lots of ways to earn and reliable redemptions. The most common negative review describes an account suspended or closed around cash-out, sometimes right after identity verification, with the SB balance forfeited. Others cite surveys that disqualify you after several minutes or don’t credit, plus game offers that don’t track or expire early. Swagbucks replied to 78% of negative Trustpilot reviews, typically within a week, usually pointing reviewers to swagbucks.com/help.

What do people on Reddit say?

Sentiment on r/SwagBucks, a 48,000-member community, is mixed. Several recent posts describe accounts suspended or deactivated right after a redemption or ID verification request, with one member saying Swagbucks repeatedly rejected their ID through what looked like automated replies.

Other common complaints: game offers that don’t track (especially on iOS), surveys that disqualify you after you’ve finished and survey pay some members call too low for the time. On the plus side, members trade tips on paid offers that earn more SB than they cost, and one said PayPal cash-outs usually arrive in about two days.

How does Swagbucks make money?

Brands, retailers, advertisers and market research companies pay Swagbucks to run surveys, promote offers, drive purchases and reach consumers. Swagbucks then uses part of that revenue to fund your rewards, according to its homepage FAQ.

For shopping, the merchant pays Swagbucks a commission when you buy through its links or browser extension, and Swagbucks shares part of that commission with you as cash back. The same goes for surveys, games, receipts and offers: the client may pay Swagbucks for your activity, and Swagbucks shares that payment with you as rewards.

That’s why tracking matters. If the merchant or client doesn’t credit the activity to Swagbucks, Swagbucks doesn’t get paid, and neither do you.

How does Swagbucks pay you?

Every 100 SB is worth $1 in rewards. Once you have enough SB, you can redeem for:

  • PayPal cash, at face value plus 30 SB (for example, 2,530 SB for $25)
  • Gift cards at face value, from brands including Amazon, Walmart and Apple
  • A Virtual Prepaid Mastercard at face value
  • Charity donations

PayPal payments can take 3–10 business days, and Amazon gift codes arrive by email within three business days of verifying your redemption.
