One perk of the Amex Membership Rewards program is the ability to link your Membership Rewards account with your Amazon account to Shop with Points. Here’s how to get your account linked and start spending.

How to redeem American Express rewards points for Amazon shopping

Before you redeem your points for Amazon purchases, you must log in to your Amazon.com account and link your membership rewards credit card account if you haven’t already. After that:

  1. Browse Amazon.com and select the items you wish to purchase.
  2. Proceed to checkout.
  3. Select membership rewards points as your payment method.

Note: You don’t have to use all your points or pay the purchase entirely with points. You can split the bill and pay part with money, part with points.

How do I connect my Amex account to my Amazon account?

To link your accounts, you’ll need to have the card you intend to use with the program included as a payment method with Amazon. From there, simply do the following:

  1. Log in to your Amazon.com account.
  2. Click on Accounts & lists at the top menu bar and click on Account.
  3. Under the Shopping programs and rentals box at the bottom of the screen, click on Shop with points.
  4. You’ll see eligible cards listed here. Click Enroll next to the card account you wish to enroll.
  5. Confirm your zip code and select your default payment preference and click Enroll.

How to earn American Express Membership Rewards points for shopping at Amazon

Earning Membership Rewards points for your Amazon purchases is easy. Every time you pay with select American Express credit cards, you automatically earn points for every dollar spent according to your card’s earn rate.

Depending on the card you choose, you can earn accelerated miles on dining at restaurants worldwide, on purchases made at US supermarkets and US gas stations, on flights purchased directly with the airlines or on prepaid hotels booked on amextravel.com.

Follow these steps to earn American Express reward points for your Amazon shopping:

  1. Log in to your Amazon.com account.
  2. Enter your American Express credit card details.
  3. Browse items.
  4. Select the items you wish to buy and follow the prompts to the checkout.
  5. Finalize the order.

Key factors to consider

Before shopping on Amazon with your Amex card, consider these details:

  • Shipping fees.
Without an Amazon Prime membership, you could pay hefty fees on shipping, depending on your item and its weight and size.
  • Processing times.
It can take several working days for your order to be processed. This also factors into delivery time if you need your purchase urgently.
  • Interest charges.
If you’re carrying an outstanding balance on your Amex card, interest will begin accruing from the day of your purchase. This can further contribute to costs outweighing the possible benefits of paying with your card.
