Expert review

The Harborstone Credit Union Cash Rewards American Express® Card is a no-annual-fee cashback card for those who mostly spend on gas and at supermarkets. Using this card, you also get a small welcome offer and can save money on interest with a short intro APR period on balance transfers and purchases.

But if you’re looking to earn a more generous signup bonus, or a longer intro APR period, similar cashback cards may be a better choice.

Card benefits

  • Cash back.
Earn 3% cash back on gas purchases on up to $6,000 annually. After that, your rate reverts to 1% cash back for the rest of the year. Purchases at supermarkets earn 2% back, and everything else you buy earns 1% cash back.
  • Welcome offer.
Earn a $25 bonus after you make your first purchase. This is a less-than-stellar deal given that similar credit cards come with a welcome offer of up to $200.
  • Intro APR period.
Get 0% intro APR period on balance transfers and purchases for the first 6 billing cycles. A variable APR of 11.99% to 17.99% applies thereafter.
  • No annual fee.
You get to earn cash back without paying an annual fee for the life of the card.

What to watch out for

  • Foreign transaction fees.
Using your card while abroad or with foreign merchants online will cost you a 2% fee if the transaction is made in US dollars and a 3% fee if it’s made in foreign currency.
  • Balance transfer limitations.
You can only use the intro APR period if you make your balance transfers within your first 186 days days when you open your account. Otherwise, the standard APR will apply.
