What is cell phone insurance?

Cell phone insurance covers your phone in cases of damage or theft.
Unfortunately, losing your phone usually isn’t covered with cell phone insurance. In the first two cases, you will have to show proof — either the damaged phone or a police report filed in the first 48 hours of the occurrence. Otherwise, your insurance won’t cover your phone.

How to get cell phone insurance

Manufacturers, retailers and wireless carriers typically offer warranties or protection plans for your phone. But this may not be cheap. Depending on the insurer, you could pay between $5 and $15 per month for a two-year plan plus a deductible between $20 and $300.

Another alternative is to get a credit card with cell phone insurance. For this type of insurance, you have to pay your phone bill with your credit card and pay a small deductible if the unfortunate event occurs, nothing more.

Who gets to use the credit card cell phone insurance?

This largely depends on the credit card provider. Some cards offer protection only to the main cardholder. Others, like the Citi Prestige® Credit Card, provide coverage for up to five cell phones. Make sure you read the terms and conditions to avoid any surprises if you ever come to use this feature.

Do all Wells Fargo credit cards come with cell phone protection?

Yes. Whichever credit card you choose, you get Wells Fargo’s cell phone protection. This applies even to the Wells Fargo Secured Credit Card and the Wells Fargo Cash Back College℠ Card.

The same cell phone protection rules apply to all Wells Fargo credit cards — up to $600 per claim with up to two claims for a maximum of $1,200 in a 12-month period with a $25 deductible.

Bottom line

If you want damage or theft protection for your smartphone, a credit card with cell phone insurance could be a good, cheap option for you.

Keep in mind, the card has to support this feature. But if this perk is secondary to your needs, compare other credit cards until you find the right fit for your wallet.
