Our verdict

Free checks and 0.03% APY can't make up for the $25 monthly fee.

The Huntington Platinum Perks Checking account — previously known as Huntington 25 Checking — offers 0.03% APY on your entire balance, no opening deposit, ATM reimbursements and can help boost your APY on other Huntington savings accounts. But these features come at the cost of a $25 monthly fee that can only be avoided when you meet the minimum balance requirement of $25,000. There isn't quite enough meat on the bone to justify the $25 a month, especially if you're looking for an interest-bearing checking account.

Best for: Consumers who also enjoy Huntington's other products.

Pros

  • No opening deposit
  • Up to $1,000 credit line after meeting requirements
  • ATM fee waivers and reimbursements

Cons

  • $25 monthly fee if balance is under $25,000
  • Low 0.03% APY
  • Only available in 11 states

Who is Huntington Platinum Perks Checking best for?

Given the benefits this account grants to other Huntington accounts and overall weak APY, this product is best suited to those interested in investing in other Huntington products, particularly its savings account or money market account.

What makes Huntington Platinum Perks Checking shine

Perhaps the biggest draw of the Huntington Platinum Perks Checking is the bolstering effect it can have on Huntington’s other products, specifically the Relationship Money Market or Huntington Relationship Savings account. For example: A Huntington Platinum Perks Checking account can bump the interest rate on your Huntington Relationship Savings account from 0.02% APY to 0.05% APY if you’re a resident of Columbus, Ohio. This boost ultimately relies on your zip code however, so consumers will need to contact their local branch for more information.

The Huntington Platinum Perks Checking account has a few other friendly perks of note. These include free checks, no opening deposit, a 24-hour overdraft grace period and ATM fee waivers and reimbursements on the first 5 non-Huntington ATM cash withdrawal fees per statement cycle, worldwide.

Finally, Huntington offers a line of credit called “Standby Cash.” You may qualify for a $100 to $1,000 line of credit that you can pay back over three months when you make at least $750 in monthly deposits for three consecutive months. The line of credit is free when you set up automatic payments or you’ll pay a 1% monthly interest charge. This offers an extra bit of spending flexibility without the need to open a separate credit card.

Where Huntington Platinum Perks Checking falls short

Huntington Platinum Perks Checking account’s biggest drawback is the monthly fee. You’ll pay a $25 monthly maintenance fee that’s only avoided when your total balance across all your Huntington accounts is at least $25,000. This is a sizable sum of money necessary just to waive a monthly fee, and a rather large monthly fee at that.

If you’re not interested in also opening a money market or savings account with Huntington, this alone makes the account a tough sell. When you add the fact that Huntington services just 11 states (Ohio, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wisconsin) has and poor ATM coverage, then the potential customer base for this product only shrinks further.

Also, although the account offers a 0.03% APY, it’s lower than the national average, which currently sits at 0.08% APY for interest-bearing checking accounts.
