What are the benefits?

To receive THC benefits, book a stay of at least two nights at a property with an eligible card.

Many travelers find the most value from these two features:

  • $75 hotel credit.
You can use this for qualifying spa, dining and resort activities.
  • Room upgrade at check-in.
This benefit is subject to availability.

A few secondary features round out The Hotel Collection perks:

  • 3x Membership Rewards points for American Express® Gold Card members.
Get this rate for prepaid bookings. Normally, you’d earn just 1x points when booking hotels outside of The Hotel Collection.
  • 5x Membership Rewards points for The Platinum Card® from American Express members.
Get this rate for prepaid bookings.
  • On prepaid bookings, you can use Pay With Points.
Apply Membership Rewards points to all or part of your prepaid hotel stay.

How much are Membership Rewards worth?

Membership Rewards points are worth different values depending on what you redeem them for. The standard point value across the credit card industry is 1 point equals 1 cent. Here’s how much Membership Rewards are worth according to the provider website as of January 2019.

Redemption optionAverage redemption value per point
Prepaid flights, hotels, cruises and vacations0.5 cents
Shop with Membership Rewards points0.5 to 0.7 cents
Use points for charges0.6 cents
Use points on Expedia.com0.7 cents
Donate to charity0.7 cents
Use points with partners such as Amazon.com, Staples.com and Walmart.com0.7 cents
Gift cards0.7 to 1 cent
Points transfersMost transfers at a 1:1 ratio

When you redeem for hotels, you’ll typically find a redemption value of 0.5 cents per point. That’s less than the industry average, but consider the perks you’ll get when booking eligible stays at The Hotel Collection properties.

You’ll find the highest redemption value when transferring points to select hotel and airline partners. With some programs — such as British Airways Executive Club and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer — you can find redemption values of more than 2 cents per point.

What is American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts?

Fine Hotels & Resorts offers more amenities at a select collection of properties. The portfolio is available only to The Platinum Card® from American Express and Centurion® Card from American Express members.

The Hotel Collection’s two most valuable benefits are probably the hotel credit and room upgrade upon availability. You’ll find similar benefits with Fine Hotels & Resorts properties:

  • Property amenity — such as a spa or food and beverage credit — with a minimum value of $100.
  • Room upgrade when you check in, upon availability.

However, Fine Hotels & Resorts bookings come with additional bonuses, which most travelers will find very attractive:

  • Daily breakfast for two
  • Guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout
  • Noon check-in, upon availability
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi

Alternatives to The Hotel Collection credit cards

If The Hotel Collection credit cards aren’t the right fit, you still have many great travel options.

The Uber Visa Card offers strong cash back on travel and dining. The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card is a good choice if you want travel rewards on everyday expenses.

Also, the PenFed Pathfinder Rewards American Express® Card may be the best no-annual-fee travel card you’ll find. It offers excellent travel rewards, an annual air-travel credit and a credit for your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application.

The Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card is a less-expensive alternative to Amex’s business cards. For flat-rate rewards, try Capital One® Spark® Miles Select for Business.

Bottom line

The right American Express card can land you perks at The Hotel Collection properties. Most travelers will find the resort credit and potential room upgrade most valuable.
