How we selected our top cards

When comparing Amex credit card welcome offers, we considered a variety of card features across each Amex option, including the total points offered, spending requirements for the offer, time allotted for obtaining the offer, reward earning and redemption categories, reward value earned per dollar spent and assorted fees. The Amex cards that stood above and beyond the others in certain categories were selected for our list.

What’s changed in 2019

The Amex Gold Card was revamped toward the end of 2018, gaining a sparkling new rewards structure. Its annual fee was increased to $250, but this could be worth paying given the card’s new dining and airline fees.

With the Amex Platinum Card and Business Platinum Card, there’s now an extra step to use your Uber credits. Your credits will be applied to your Uber account as Uber Credits, so select this option when you take your rides.

Both of these cards took a slight hit this year, as American Express announced it wouldn’t allow Centurion Lounge access at final destinations for Platinum members.
