Sunoco Rewards Credit Card review

Last updated:

A gas credit card too limited in scope for consideration.

  • You might consider this card if you get your gas exclusively at Sunoco.
  • You’ll want to pick something else if you want bigger rewards on a wider variety of purchases.
  • Apply with a good to an excellent credit score of 670 or higher for the best chance of approval.

Expert review

For a card that requires a good to excellent credit score, the Sunoco Rewards Credit Card is rather limited. It offers a 5 cent discount on every gallon of gas purchased at Sunoco gas stations. This discount is boosted to 10 cents per gallon during your first 60 day after account opening. If a gallon is priced at $2.50, that’s about a 2% discount on your gas purchase, or a 4% discount during the first 60 days. But that’s the extent of this card’s rewards. You won’t find additional discounts or rewards on any other purchases.

Thankfully, this card doesn’t charge an annual fee. But the rest of this card isn’t much to write home about – the “signup bonus” is rather weak compared to other gas cards on the market. A 10 cents discount on a gallon of gas is nice in a vacuum, but the average consumer is only going to be able to fill their tank so often in that time period. There’s also the question of accessibility: you might not have easy access to a Sunoco gas station. A quick search showed exactly one Sunoco within a 100 mile radius of my location.

Card benefits

  • Discounts on gas.
Get 5 cents off on each gallon of gas purchased at Sunoco gas stations. Earn 10 cents off on each gallon of gas purchased during your first 60 days after account opening.

Breaking down the numbers, this amounts to a 2% and 4% discount on your gas purchases, respectively. While an 4% discount is impressive on the surface, it’s less impressive when stacked up against the value offered by the competition. Let’s take a look at the Sunoco Rewards Credit Card versus two top performers, the PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa Signature® Card and the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi.

CardRewardsSignup bonusAnnual feeCredit score requiredIntro APR
Sunoco Rewards Credit Card5 cents off per gallon purchased at Sunoco10 cents off per gallon purchased at Sunoco for your first 60 days$0670None
PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa Signature® Card5x points on gas, 3x points on groceries, 1x points on all other purchases.

Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi4% back on eligible gas for the first $7,000 each year, then 1% back.3% back on eligible travel, 2% back on all Costco and Costco.com purchases, and 1% back on everything elseNone$60, the cost of a Costco membership, works as a Costco membership card740None

Even without crunching the numbers, you can see that the PenFed and Costco cards offer a much wider variety of ways to earn on your spending. The PenFed and Costco not only earn comparable or better rates on gas, but can earn at a wider variety of gas stations. Plus, you’ll earn on other everyday purchases, like groceries or Costco purchases.

Even compared to other store-brand gas cards, the Sunoco is lacking. Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the Sunoco Rewards Credit Card and the Chevron and/or Texaco Techron Advantage Visa® Card.

CardRewardsSignup bonusAnnual feeCredit score requiredIntro APR
Sunoco Rewards Credit Card5 cents off per gallon purchased at Sunoco10 cents off per gallon purchased at Sunoco for your first 60 days$0670None
Chevron and/or Texaco Techron Advantage Visa® Card3 cents off per gallon. 10 cents off per gallon if you spend $300 to $999.99 in a month. 20 cents per gallon if you spend $1,000 or more in a month.None$0580None

Once your welcome offer on the Sunoco Rewards Credit Card is over, you’re permanently locked in to a 5 cent discount on your Sunoco gas purchases. With the Chevron and/or Texaco Techron Advantage Visa® Card, you can reliably earn 20 cents per gallon, provided you spend at least $1,000 each month with your card. This is a terrific incentive to balance out the fact that you can only earn on Chevron or Texaco gas stations.

  • Free family cards.
You can obtain additional family cards at no extra cost.
  • No annual fee.
You won’t pay an annual fee to use this card.

What to watch out for

  • Weak signup bonus.
Unlike a few of the leading gas reward cards on the market, you won’t find a cash or point windfall with the card’s welcome offer. Instead, you get a slight boost to your gas discount, albeit one outshined by other gas cards on the market.
  • Limited earning potential.
This card doesn’t earn cash back on any purchases aside from Sunoco Gas. What’s more, rewards for this card are limited to just Sunoco gas stations, not all gas stations.

Bottom line

With a less than impressive rewards rate and limited earning categories, the Sunoco Rewards Credit Card doesn’t offer nearly enough to warrant a look, even if you frequent Sunoco gas stations.

You’ll want to look at your other gas reward card options to find one that offer a better combination of flexibility and value for your gas needs.
