This is an open-loop card you can use everywhere Mastercard is accepted. Starting at 1,999 monthly gallons of fuel purchased, you’ll earn volume rebates between $0.005 and $0.03. However, watch out for potentially steep program administration fees of up to 10 cents per gallon and a card fee of up to $10 per card per month, which can easily wipe out your savings.

As a limited-time offer, you can save 6 cents per gallon on 3,000 monthly gallons of fuel on top of the base rebates. To take advantage of this promotion, set up your account by the end of 2019.

Card benefits

  • Earn up to 6 cents per gallon in rebates.
Earn up to 3 cents per gallon at stations in the Retail Savings Network. Also, earn up to 3 cents per gallon depending on the volume of fuel you purchase. In total, you could earn up to 6 cents per gallon in rebates.

The card’s volume rebates aren’t particularly strong, as you have to purchase a large amount of fuel to get the top rebate. Meanwhile, other cards might offer up to a 6-cent-per-gallon rebate for around 10,000 monthly gallons purchased.

You’ll save 5% when you make purchases at these locations, courtesy of the Mastercard Easy Savings Network.
  • Make maintenance and fuel purchases.
This is an open-loop card, so you can use it virtually anywhere that accepts credit cards. There are around 160,000 Comdata fuel locations and around 400,000 Comdata maintenance locations.
  • Monitor spending.
You can view transaction details online and manage your card account. With purchase controls, you can limit card spending to certain types of purchases.

What to watch out for

  • Not all purchases earn rebates or rewards.
Aviation, natural gas, bulk fuel and propane purchases don’t qualify for rebates. Purchases at some non-qualifying merchants are also ineligible. Volume rebates apply only at Level 3 sites. These are locations that allow Level 3 data processing — i.e., those that track detailed information such as vehicle IDs, driver IDs and odometer readings.
  • You may need to put down a security deposit.
After evaluating your account, Fleetcor may ask you to provide funds for a security deposit. In this case, your spend limit will be 80% of your deposit.
  • High interest.
Carrying a balance on this card comes with an APR of 28.99% variable.

When will my account be considered high-risk?

Your account may be designated as high-risk if:

    • You have a commercial credit score below 520.
    • You have a personal credit score below 660.

    • You’re 30 or more days late on payments in any 12-month rolling period.
    • Your bank doesn’t honor a payment you’ve made.

Fleetcor may change your spend limit, payment days or billing cycle if you have a high-risk account. It may also add a fee of $5 per transaction you make or 2% of your account’s spend limit per billing cycle — whichever is greater.

    • Fees.

What credit score do I need?

A fair credit score of 580 may be sufficient to be approved for this card. Take stock of your and your company’s financial condition before applying. Approval is never guaranteed, but you have higher odds with a high credit score.

    Bottom line

This card is hampered by extensive fees and high interest. However, you’ll find solid fuel rebates and attractive rewards at select maintenance merchants.

If you’re not sure a fleet card is the right fit, consider a small-business gas card.
