Our take on Brigit

Brigit is an app that’s best for employed people who need a little extra help managing their finances. When you’re low on funds, you can request a cash advance of up to $250 to cover you until your next payday. It also has an overdraft feature that alerts you when your bank balance is low and provides automatic overdraft protection.
Brigit automates its repayment process and notifies you 24 hours before your due date, with the payment automatically deducted from your bank account. There are no extra fees or interest charges for this service. And if you run into trouble, Brigit allows you to extend your due date to avoid overdrafting your account.
But while many customers have praised the Brigit app for helping them during lean times, others have complained about glitches with the app and getting charged the monthly fee while being denied advances. Others have complained of difficulty canceling the service when they didn’t need it anymore.
If you’re looking to borrow more than $250, you’ll need to consider your other short-term loan options.

Brigit overview

Brigit is an app that allows you to request a cash advance when you’re in danger of overdrafting your bank account. It offers two service levels: A $0 plan with educational features only and a $9.99 monthly plan that offers transfers up to $250 when you’re low on funds, a credit builder tool and $1 million in identity theft protection.

Features

  • Borrow up to $250
  • Membership costs $9.99/month
  • Funding typically in one to three days

Requirements

Beside regularly using your checking account, to qualify for an advance, you must have:

  • A bank account balance greater than $0.
  • A cash cushion in your bank account after you get paid.
  • A checking account open for more than 60 days with a Brigit-supported bank.

Other features

In addition to cash advances, Brigit’s paid monthly subscription features a credit builder tool, credit monitoring and a $1 million in identity-theft protection.

Google Play Score 4.6 out of 5 stars, based on 114,000 customer reviews
Customer reviews verified as of 13 April 2023

Reviews about Brigit are mixed across Google Play, the App Store and Trustpilot. Some users are happy with the app, reporting quick funds disbursal, responsive customer service and credit-building opportunities.
On the flip side, many users complain of app glitches, extra charges and difficulty canceling their subscriptions. Others think the $9.99 monthly fee is too high in exchange for the low advance amounts offered to them — resulting in the equivalent of high APRs.
Brigit isn’t registered with the Better Business Bureau and has garnered a fair number of complaints over the past three years. Customers complain about unexplained charges, cash advance denials despite paying the monthly fee and memberships not being canceled as requested.

Brigit cash advance vs. payday loan

A Brigit cash advance might be due on your next payday, but that’s where its similarities to a payday loan ends. Here’s how the two stack up:

Brigit cash advancePayday loan
Borrowing amountUp to $250Typically up to $1,000, and most states allow only one at a time
Turnaround time1 to 2 business daysTypically next business day
Application processSign up through the mobile app, requires connection to an individual checking accountSimple online application, typically requires Social Security number and bank account numbers
Costs$9.99 monthly membership feeHigh fees that can equal fees of $15 to $25 per $100 borrowed
AvailabilityAnywhere in the USProhibited in some states

Is Brigit safe to use?

In general, yes — though no app can guarantee your information stays 100% safe. Brigit does its part by using a secure 256-bit encryption system to protect your personal and banking data. And unlike many payday lenders, you don’t need to provide your Social Security number to sign up.
Beyond its security system, its privacy policy outlines what kinds of information it collects, how it’s used and whether it’s shared. If you decide you no longer want to use Brigit, its privacy policy also explains what information is deleted and what’s retained.

Why does Brigit ask for $3000 of income?

Avatar

Charisse Finder

Hi Shanella,

Thanks for reaching out to Finder.

While Brigit did not provide any explanation as to why they require an income of $3000, generally, having a specific income requirement is a way for lenders to ensure their borrowers have the capacity to repay their loan/cash advance.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
Charisee

Does Brigit or any of these type of services accept disability pay?

Hi Dorkas,

Thank you for your comment.

I am sorry to inform you that advance pay apps do not provide services to pensions and disability pay. An applicant must be gainfully employed and should be working regular hours. You may refer to the eligibility criteria for the advance pay apps.

Please note that some apps may also require you to work for a specific employer or make a minimum amount of money each month to qualify.

Regards,
Jhezelyn

What happens if I don’t pay them back? Will it effect my credit score ?

Avatar

Hello Runny,

Thank you for your comment.

Yes, it will definitely affect your credit score. Defaulting happens when you can't pay back your loans on time. This can cause your credit score to plummet, your wages to be garnished and future loans to have high-interest rates.

You may refer to our article on what could happen if you don’t pay back your payday loan.

Jhezelyn

What happens if you do not pay Brigit back?

Avatar

Jeni Finder

June 26, 2019

Hi Maire,

Thank you for getting in touch with Finder.

With Brigit, if you cannot repay on your due date, you can extend it using an extension credit. Please note that Brigit connects to your bank account and once you default payment with them they will keep on trying to deduct the amount a few more times. Each time the payment is returned for insufficient funds, your bank will charge an insufficient funds fee which might put you into deeper debt with your bank and at the same time Brigit is trying to collect payment for your loan.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Cheers,
Jeni
