The basics

The Blue Business℠ Plus Credit Card has features that could handily support a small business owner who is just starting out and needs to make a large initial purchase or get a break on interest payments for existing debt. You’ll receive an intro APR of 0% for the first 15 months following your account opening on balance transfers requested within the first 60 days and on purchases, and then 12.99%, 16.99% or 20.99% variable APR after that. On top of that, there are $0 annual fees.

Compared to other small business cards, the Blue Business℠ Plus Credit Card has one of the longest intro APRs. Cutting out interest payments over 15 months can help your small business save big.

Aside from the long intro period, you also get reward points on all purchases. For the first $50,000 you spend per year you earn 2 points per dollar spent, and 1 point per dollar thereafter. You can redeem these points for shopping through the Membership Rewards® site, travel, gift cards or statement credit.

The perks

  • Low intro balance transfer APR.

The Blue Business℠ Plus Credit Card comes with one of the longest intro periods available when compared against other small business credit cards. Cash in on a 0% intro APR for balance transfers for the first 15 months following your account opening (and then 12.99%, 16.99% or 20.99% variable APR) as long as you make the balance transfer request within 60 days.

  • Low intro APR for purchases.

Get a 0% intro APR for purchases for the first 15 months following your account opening. After that it is a 12.99%, 16.99% or 20.99% variable APR. This is beneficial for small companies that are starting out and have limited cash inflow. The long intro period could help you carry the balance until you can pay it off.

  • $0 annual fees.

The Blue Business℠ Plus Credit Card has $0 annual fees, which makes it a good option for your business if you are looking to minimize your card fees.

  • Earn membership reward points.

With every dollar you spend on up to $50,000 per year, you earn 2x membership points and 1x point thereafter. You can redeem these points in several ways, including purchasing flights, hotel accommodations or gift cards, or shopping through the Membership Rewards® site.

How much are membership reward points worth?

10,000 points are worth:

  • $50–$100 in gift cards and vouchers.
  • $50–$70 for shopping with stores supported by the Membership Rewards® site including Amazon, Newegg, BestBuy and Staples among others.
  • $50–$100 for traveling costs such as flights, hotels, cruises and purchases through Expedia.
  • $50 for entertainment purchases through Ticketmaster and AXS.
  • $70–$100 for point of sale purchases with New York City taxis and at Rite Aid.
  • $50–$100 if you donate to charity.

You’ll also like

  • Buy above your credit limit.

You have the option to buy above your credit limit with Blue Business℠ Plus Credit Card. This is an automatic feature and you don’t need to call the bank to set it up. However, the amount you can spend is limited.

  • Expense management tools.

You’ll have access to online capabilities including Spend Manager to help you manage your expenses, the ability to set up account managers and tools to transfer all of your card data directly to your QuickBooks account.

  • Roadside assistance.

Whenever you’re stranded on the road and you need a tire changed, a tow or your battery changed, you can call the number on the back of your card for the roadside assistance hotline. They will immediately coordinate with emergency services who will help you out.

What to watch out for

  • Late payment fees.

Try to make your payments on time to avoid paying unnecessary penalty fees, which can be up to $38 for late payments.

  • Foreign transaction fees.

To limit your expenses while traveling abroad, you may want to refrain from using this card as it has a 2.7% foreign transaction fee.

  • Balance transfer limits.

Balance transfers made within 60 days when you opened your account can be approved. Also, you can transfer up to $15,000 or 75% of your credit limit, whichever is lower. Keep in mind that balance transfers from another American Express account won’t be accepted.

Consider other cards if…

  • You want higher cashback rewards.

If your company spends thousands of dollars on gas or office supplies you may want to consider other cards such as the Business Advantage Cash Rewards Mastercard® credit card by Bank of America, which offers you 3% cash back on gas and office supplies up to $250,000 annually and 1% thereafter, 2% on restaurant purchases and 1% on all other purchases.

Another card with higher cashback rewards is the SimplyCash® Plus Business Credit Card from American Express. It provides 5% cash back at US office supply stores and on wireless telephone services purchased directly from US service providers and 3% on a category of your choice from those listed on the Amex website. The 5% and 3% cash back applies on up to $50,000 spent per year, and after that a 1% reward applies.

  • You want travel rewards.

If your company spends heavily on business travel, then you may consider other cards such as the Business Advantage Travel Rewards World Mastercard® credit card by Bank of America. You can get 1.5 points per every $1 spent on all purchases and 3 points per $1 spent through Bank of America Travel Center. You can redeem these points for statement credit toward travel purchases.

Another similar card is the Spark® Miles Select for Business, which offers you 1.5 miles per $1 spent.
