American Express: Gold Card vs. Platinum Card

Which of these high-end charge cards is going to be the one?

Updated

Fact checked
The Amex Gold Card has a $250 annual fee but up to a couple hundred dollars in annual statement credits. Meanwhile, the Amex Platinum Card has a $550 annual fee but up to twice as much as the Amex Gold Card in annual statement credits as well as premium travel perks. When it comes to rewards, the Amex Gold Card is superior for groceries and dining, while the Amex Platinum Card takes the prize for flights and hotel stays.

Both cards aren’t your typical credit card — they’re charge cards. This means your full balance is due every month. Note that the American Express® Gold Card lets you carry a balance with interest for eligible purchases of $100 or more. Though it’s the only major provider of charge cards, American Express also offers traditional credit cards if you’d prefer to carry a balance.
