Zelle vs. Cash App
We look into the fees and features of these two competing money transfer apps to help you figure out which is best for you.
Zelle and Cash App are both options for sending money, but which will work better for you? Zelle is the more basic option of the two, as its main feature is to transfer money between two bank accounts. If those bank accounts are already supported by Zelle’s network, fantastic, the transfer should be nearly instant — if the accounts aren’t supported then you may have to wait a few business days or more.
Cash App, on the other hand, has a wider range of services that include paying for your transfer with a credit or debit card, buying and selling stocks and cryptocurrencies, holding money in a digital wallet and sending money to the UK. But if you’re just looking to send and receive money, picking between Zelle and Cash App might be easier after you consider these pros and cons.
We recommend Zelle for
- Users that already have bank accounts supported by Zelle — see a full list here.
- Sending and receiving money from people you know — Zelle isn’t made for transfers between strangers.
- Avoiding escrow services or digital wallets, Zelle transfers go directly into a bank account.
We recommend Cash App for
- Sending and receiving private transfers from friends, family and strangers.
- Accepting direct deposit and managing your money in a digital wallet.
- Diverse options in one app: stocks, cryptocurrencies, digital wallet services, transfers and more.
If you’re still on the fence, compare these two apps by fees, speeds and many more options using our breakdown table to figure out which service is best for you.

Summing up Zelle vs. Cash App
If you are just looking to send and receive money from your friends and family, and your bank account is already supported by Zelle’s network, use Zelle. However, if you think you’ll use even one of the extra services offered by Cash App, download it for free and give it a test run. Both of these apps are free to download and use, but some fees may apply for extra services.
Be aware that Zelle doesn’t support any international transfers, and Cash App only allows you to send to the UK — compare your international money transfer options if you are looking to send money overseas.
