Peapod review

Last updated:

Find out how the grocery service works, a cost breakdown, pros and cons and more.

Peapod is a delivery service that shops, packs and delivers your groceries right to your home or business. And with contact-free delivery, you’ll receive a text or email when your delivery arrives. Your delivery driver will leave your groceries on your doorstep or at the building entrance, so you’ll have minimal contact.

Order pickup has been paused in many locations due to unprecedented demand and limited inventory.

Quick take

Pros

  • Staples list. Peapod has a handy tool that saves regularly purchased items that you can refer back to.
  • Suggestion tool. Order Genius is a tool that recommends items based on your previous purchases — a nice feature in case something slipped your mind.
  • Sorting. Peapod lets you “browse aisles,” just like you would on a traditional grocery run. You can also sort by price, view the most popular items and filter your search for organic and local options.
  • Fast delivery. Most customers enjoy next-day delivery, while a few areas offer same-day delivery.

Cons

  • Re-delivery fee. You must be home to receive your order. If you miss the delivery, you may be charged a re-delivery fee of $15.
  • Late deliveries. Like with other services, some customers report deliveries made hours after their delivery window.
  • Limited delivery time slots. Due to the increased demand for grocery deliveries, customers have struggled to secure a time slot for their orders.
  • Inaccurate inventory. Peapod’s website does not have a live inventory, which means items from your order may be out of stock and you won’t know until delivery. You can opt for substitutions, but you might not get what you want and there may be a price difference.
  • No update order option. While you can adjust some aspects of your order after it’s made, you can’t add or remove items once it’s been placed.

Peapod reviews and complaints

Customer reviews for Peapod are mixed. It has some loyal customers who have ordered for years. They praise its convenience and the friendly food delivery personnel.

But some users complain about broken eggs and meat that has spoiled. More recent negative reviews cite most items being out of stock and trouble getting a delivery spot due to increased demand during the pandemic.

How Peapod works

You’ll shop for groceries on Peapod’s website or app. Schedule your delivery, and Peapod’s professional drivers — where food delivery is their career, not a side gig — will deliver your groceries in a climate-controlled vehicle right to your doorstep.

Or, alternatively, you can select pick-up. Choose a one-hour pickup time slot at a participating location. When your appointment time rolls around, park in a designated parking spot and call the number on the sign. A store associate will check your license through the window and load your groceries into your car.

How to use Peapod

Here’s how to shop for your home and business on Peapod:
1. On Peapod’s website, enter your ZIP code to see if delivery or pickup is available in your area.
2. If Peapod has partnered with a local supermarket, click Get started to go to the partner website.
3. Sign in or create an account, and then begin adding items to your cart.
4. Click Check out and select whether you want your order delivered or for pickup, if available.
5. Choose a time slot and enter your billing information.
6. Review and place your order.

How much does Peapod cost?

The delivery fee is based on how much you spend, while pickup carries a flat fee. See the following cost breakdown for delivery and pickup.

Can I get free delivery?

Peapod offers a membership subscription, PodPass, that grants free shipping on orders over $100 and waives the pickup fee on all orders. If your order is less than $100, you’ll get $6.95 off the delivery fee. You can select a 3-month, 6-month, or 12-month pass and whether you want mid-week deliveries.

SubscriptionFor Tuesday through Thursday deliveries onlyAny time deliveries
3 months$25$49
12 months$55$119
6 months$35$69

Your PodPass automatically renews and doesn’t include sales tax. But you can cancel any time.

If you don’t want a subscription, Peapod frequently sends out coupons that can shave down the delivery cost or waive the fee entirely.

Delivery costs

Its delivery service has a minimum order amount of $30. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect to pay for the convenience:

Order TotalFee
$30–$75$9.95
$75–$100$7.95
$100+$6.95

Additional fees — such as a fuel surcharge — and applicable sales tax may apply.

Tipping

Tipping is optional but always appreciated. Some customers tip per bag, while others may choose a percentage of the order total.
It’s always a nice gesture to tip a little extra, especially if the delivery requires multiple trips or if you ordered heavy items like a case of bottled water.

Where is Peapod available?

Although it started in the Midwest, Peapod is now primarily available on the East Coast. You can check if it’s in your area by entering your zipcode on its website.

Peapod isn’t near me. Now what?

If Peapod isn’t available in your area yet, enter your email address to get notified if the service ever becomes available. For the time being, check if other delivery services like Amazon or Instacart are available.

Or you can contact your local grocery store to see if it also offers delivery options or order pickup.

Peapod returns

If there’s a problem with an order, contact Peapod at 800-519-8169 within seven days of delivery. They can issue a credit or coupon.

Bottom line

Peapod has excellent tools to help you build your shopping list and a professional food delivery team, but like with other grocery services during the pandemic, it may be difficult to snag a delivery spot.

If Peapod doesn’t sound like the right fit for you or if it isn’t available in your area, compare other grocery delivery services to find a more suitable option for your needs.
