Like most money market accounts, the Nationwide Money Market Plus account offers free ATM and check-writing privileges. Its 0.25% APY is also over twice the national average of 0.12% APY.

However, there’s no overdraft protection, and you’ll need to keep a daily balance of at least $1,000 to avoid the $8 monthly fee.

You can find other money market accounts with higher interest rates, a lower opening deposit and minimum balance. For example, the Quontic Bank Money Market account offers 3.5% APY and a $100 opening deposit requirement.

To compare, if you keep $1,000 in the Nationwide Money Market Plus account, you’ll earn $2.50 in interest for the year if you don’t put in any more money. If you take the same amount in the Quontic Bank account, you’ll earn $30.0.

The more money you keep in the account, the higher your earning potential. Getting an account with a higher interest rate makes the most sense if you plan to keep a high balance in your account.

What are the benefits of a Nationwide Money Market Plus account?

  • Free starter checks. When you open your account, you can order free checks, but you’ll pay for shipping.
  • Reimbursed ATM fees. Get up to $10 of out-of-network ATM fees reimbursed each month.

How much interest you can earn

Earn an APY that’s higher than the national average for savings accounts, although it’s not the highest around that we’ve seen for a money market account. Examples of how much you could earn depending on your balance:

APYAmount in savingsInterest earned in 12 months
0.25%$1,000$2.50
0.25%$5,000$12.52
0.25%$10,000$25.03

What should I look out for?

  • Not the highest APY on market. You’ll earn a decent 0.25% APY no matter how much money you keep in the account. However, other accounts like the Bread Savings High-Yield Savings account offer as high as a 2.15% APY.
  • Monthly maintenance fee. You’ll pay $8 a month in maintenance fees unless you keep a daily balance of at least $1,000. Other savings accounts charge higher fees, but you can find many money market options without a monthly fee at all.
  • High overdraft fees. If you overdraft on this account, you’ll have to pay $25 for each transaction, up to $75 a day in fees.
  • High opening deposit. You’ll need at least $1,000 to open this account, whereas other accounts require less, such as the Quontic Bank Money Market account’s $100 minimum opening deposit.

If you’re looking to earn higher interest, try the Quontic Bank Money Market account with its 3.5% APY, or the Quontic Bank High Yield Savings account with a 3.5% APY.
