Expert review

Rider includes several coverage types with its standard motorcycle policies, including uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and roadside assistance. It’s ideal for riders who just want a basic policy with low rates.

However, competitors may provide more options overall, especially for bike-specific perks. And Rider is only offered in eight states, so you might not be able to get coverage anyway.

What motorcycle insurance coverage does Rider offer?

Rider offers the basic coverage you need to get out on the road. This coverage comes standard on all motorcycle policies:

  • Bodily injury liability. Cover medical expenses for the other driver involved when you cause an accident.
  • Property damage liability. Pay for vehicle or other property damages related to your accident.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist. Cover your personal injuries when the other driver at fault doesn’t have enough insurance to cover the bill.
  • Roadside assistance. Take care of minor roadside repair needs, including towing, a battery jumpstart, flat tires or emergency fluid delivery.
  • Medical payments. Depending on the state, Rider may also include this coverage on your standard policy. However, this coverage applies to pedestrians injured by your motorcycle, not to the motorcycle driver or passengers.

What extra benefits and add-ons does Rider offer?

The company offers several benefits and add-ons that widen your coverage during an accident:

  • Collision. Pay for repairs to your own motorcycle when you collide with another vehicle or object.
  • Comprehensive. Protect yourself from non-collision accidents — such as storms, broken glass, theft or vandalism.
  • Accessories. Cover expenses for optional equipment, customized parts and paint jobs up to $8,000. This coverage is included on any policy with physical damage coverage and kicks in as a secondary coverage after collision and comprehensive.
  • Safety apparel and trip interruption. Pay expenses for damaged safety apparel — such as your helmet — as well as food and lodging if you’re stuck away from home after a covered accident. This coverage is also included on any policy with physical damage coverage.

What types of motorcycles does Rider cover?

The company covers a variety of motorcycles, including:

  • Cruisers
  • Enduros
  • High-performance motorcycles
  • Off-road vehicles
  • Sport bikes
  • Standard motorcycles

What discounts can I get with Rider?

Rider provides a few discounts you may qualify for:

  • Multibike. Insure more than one vehicle on the same motorcycle policy with Rider.
  • Preferred operator. Find savings for having a clean driving record for three or more years. Must also have a motorcycle license, be at least 26 years old and be insuring a non-sport bike to qualify.
  • Accident and ticket forgiveness. Preferred operators can get minor accidents and traffic violations waived in some cases.
  • Sport bike safe driver. Insuring a sport or high-performance bike? Get a discount if you’re at least 35 years old and have had a clean driving record for three years.
  • Switch and save. Switch coverage on your standard bike to Rider for savings.
  • Delaware safe operator. Get a 10% to 5% discount for completing a state-certified defensive driving course.
  • Virginia defensive driver. Receive 5% off for completing a state-approved safety course for riders over 55 years old.

Pros and cons of Rider motorcycle insurance

Pros

  • Motorcycle-only provider. Rider has specialized in motorcycle insurance alone for 45 years and counting.
  • Wide standard coverage. The company includes many benefits in its standard coverage. Competitors often charge extra for similar features.
  • Roadside assistance included. All Rider policies get access to its roadside assistance, a helpful feature during breakdowns on the road.
  • Flexible payments. Choose to pay your premium upfront or in four, six or nine installments.

Cons

  • Coverage options. Rider offers several coverage add-ons, but competitors may offer more options.
  • Discount qualifications. To receive a discount, you’ll often have to meet several criteria. Not everyone will qualify for discounts.
  • Not available in every state. Rider currently only services eight states: Delaware, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
