Snap Finance Review (2026): BNPL & Installment Loans at High Rates

Our verdict

Financing options to purchase durable goods, but rates can be high and aren’t transparent.

Snap Finance offers lease-to-own financing, installment loans and retail installment contracts (RICs) up to $5,000. It's basically a buy now, pay later (BNPL) app, although it doesn’t use that term and even short-term plans come with fees. It accepts people with poor or no credit and has low income requirements to qualify. But it's not up front about its borrowing costs, and rates for longer-term plans are reportedly in the triple digits.

Best for: Borrowers with poor credit who are looking to finance durable consumer goods such as furniture, appliances and auto parts.

Pros

  • Short-term loans up to $5,000
  • Lenient requirements to qualify
  • Also offers longer term plans

Cons

  • Financing fees for short-term loans
  • High rates for long-term plans
  • Not transparent about rates and fees

Is Snap Finance legit?

Snap Finance is a legitimate lease-to-own service, founded in 2012. To date, it’s claimed to have helped more than seven million customers with their financing needs. But that doesn’t mean customers shouldn’t still be cautious. Watch out for possible hidden fees, plus triple-digit interest rates if you can’t pay it off within the promotional window.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) also reported a government action against Snap Finance from the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General in 2023. The suit alleged that Snap Finance used misleading advertising to promote “100-day cash payoffs” when in reality contracts were for 12 months at leasing fees equivalent to 152% APR. Without admitting guilt, Snap and its affiliates were ordered to pay over $10 million in cash restitution and consumer debt relief.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) also sued Snap Finance in 2023 under similar allegations. Ultimately, CFPB chose to dismiss the case with prejudice, meaning the case was permanently closed.

129% - 195% APR
Not available in: CO, CT, GA, IA, MD, MA, NY, SD, VT, WV. Comes with the option to change your due date so you won’t fall behind on repayments.
Important information
The advertised APR is an estimate based on currently available information, is not final, and is subject to change. If approved, your actual rate will be determined and assigned based on your creditworthiness, income, application information, and other relevant factors. Applications submitted on the OppLoans platform will be originated by one of our bank partners and serviced by OppLoans. Please see the Rates and Terms for details regarding the availability of products in your state of residence. Subject to credit approval and verification. Actual approved loan amount and terms are dependent on our bank partners’ standard underwriting guidelines and credit policies. Funds may be deposited for delivery to your bank via ACH as soon as the same business day if verification is completed and final approval occurs before 12:00 PM CT on a business day. If approval occurs after 12:00 PM CT on a business day or on a non-business day, funds may be delivered as soon as the next business day. Availability of the funds is dependent on how quickly your bank processes the transaction. Installment loan amounts typically range from $500 to $5,000. Annual percentage rate (APR) ranges from 129% to 195%. Installment loan lengths range from 9 to 18 months. Example: A $2,000 installment loan repayable in 9 monthly payments with an APR of 160% would have monthly payments of $394.58. Loan amount, APR, and repayment terms may vary by state, please see https://www.opploans.com/rates-and-terms for additional information. Approval is not guaranteed. If approved, your actual rate will fall within the marketed range of rates, and will be determined and assigned based on your creditworthiness, income, application information, and other relevant factors. Not all applicants will qualify for the lowest available rates. This is an expensive form of credit and you should determine whether the offered product(s) meets your financial needs. OppLoans’ Bank Partners may use credit report information provided by Clarity Services and Experian as part of the application process to determine your creditworthiness. The credit inquiry will appear as a soft credit inquiry on your Experian credit report and a hard credit inquiry on your Clarity report. Therefore it will not affect your FICO credit score. OppLoans and its Bank Partners report customer payment history to the three major credit bureaus. On-time payments may improve credit score.

What makes Snap Finance shine?

Snap Finance offers lease-to-own, RICs and installment loans of up to $5,000 to borrowers with less-than-perfect credit, giving them access to consumer goods such as furniture, electronics, appliances and auto parts. These loans are generally easy to qualify for, with a low minimum income requirement of $750 to $1,000 a month.

Its most affordable option is to complete your payments within 100 days or less, although there is an unspecified finance charge. If you need longer to repay the loan, Snap offers terms up to 18 months.

Where Snap Finance falls short

One of the drawbacks to Snap Finance is its lack of transparency about loan terms, rates and fees. Nowhere on its website does it disclose a range of interest rates for any of its loan products or the financing or processing fees it charges.

However, customers who have used Snap financing — and were unable to pay within 100 days — report having to pay double or triple the original cost of the product or service.

Snap Finance has high ratings on the BBB, Trustpilot and the app stores, with many customers saying they’ve used the app multiple times. Top reviews say the service is convenient and flexible and has good customer support.

But the picture isn’t completely rosy. There are complaints of high interest rates, payments being taken after the loan is already repaid and difficulty getting refunded. Many customers also warn that if you don’t repay the loan within the 100-day promotional period, full-term interest is applied and you’ll end up paying two or three times what you borrowed.

On top of that, several customers said their very last payment before the 100 days failed to be deducted — through no fault of their own — triggering the full interest. And when they reached out repeatedly to customer service about what seemed to be a technical error, they were told nothing could be done. However, at least some of those instances appeared to get resolved after customers filed formal complaints.

What do people on Reddit say?

There are mixed reviews on Reddit. Some people think it’s great, but others, not so much. Still, they all agree that if you do use Snap, you should try to repay it within the 100-day window to avoid getting crushed with interest.
