How to compare credit card deals in Canada

The best credit card offers in Canada can put a lot in your pocket and give you access to loads of free perks. But opening up a new credit account impacts your credit score and can be a pathway to debt if you don’t manage your spending responsibly. Before applying, consider these points:

  • What are the card’s standard rates and fees? Credit card bonus offers are designed to be eye-catching, but they don’t last forever. After the promotional period expires, higher default rates and fees will apply. Don’t apply for a card you can’t afford in the long run.
  • When does the credit card bonus end? Issuers regularly switch up their offers, so you may have some time to think about a promotion before following through. Just don’t wait too long, or you might miss out.
  • Is getting a new credit card beneficial? Different cards come with different perks, ranging from low rates and fees to rewards and premium benefits. Which features are your priority, and will a new card meet your financial needs and goals better than the card(s) you already have?
  • What are the requirements? In addition to age and Canadian residency requirements (unless you’re a temporary resident), credit cards usually come with minimum income and credit score requirements. Credit card offers may also require qualifying actions or impose limits on the bonuses you can get.

Pros and cons of credit card offers

Pros

  • Bonuses and perks. If you meet the qualification requirements, credit card offers provide a relatively easy way to put some extra cash in your pocket or rack up accelerated rewards for your next trip or fun purchase.
  • Variety. Credit card deals exist for just about every type of spender, from those who want to consolidate and pay off debt faster to frequent spenders who want to earn back as much of their purchases as they can.
  • Rewards for everyday spending. Credit card promotions reward you above regular reward levels for spending on everyday expenses like gas and groceries. Life costs money. You might as well earn something extra for your payments.

Cons

  • Requirements. Getting approved for a credit card can be tough if your finances aren't in shape, although it's not impossible. Even after you're approved, you may still need to complete certain actions to benefit from a credit card promotion.
  • Limits. Spending caps may apply to promotional rates and rewards, or high spending may be required to earn the maximum cash back or points bonus.
  • Debt and ongoing costs. Standard rates and fees apply once the promotional period ends, which could include an annual fee or high interest on unpaid balances (unless you have a card with no annual fee or a low ongoing rate). Spending irresponsibly could land you in a cycle of debt.

How many credit cards can I have?

The short answer is that you can have as many credit cards as you qualify for. There’s no legal limit in Canada to the number of credit cards you can hold, and you can switch to new cards whenever you want (provided your balance is entirely paid off or transferred to another card).

In fact, if you have more than one credit card, you’re not alone. Clearly Payments reports that the average Canadian holds 2.7 cards.

However, wanting a new credit card doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get it. Individual card issuers determine your eligibility based on their own standards, which usually consider your income, existing debt, payment history and other factors.

The better your credit score, the more cards you can qualify for. But there are options if you have poor credit, such as secured cards, which can help build your credit score, so you can qualify for better cards.

Bear in mind that credit card deals and promotions are usually reserved for new cardholders. You likely won’t qualify for a special offer on a card you currently have or have had in the past.

Over half of Canadians have a credit card

Credit card debt is the most commonly held type of debt in Canada, according to the Finder: Consumer Sentiment Survey March 2026. More than half of Canadians (56%) carry a balance on at least one credit card. Around one in five Canadians have a mortgage (22%), personal line of credit (20%) and/or auto loan or lease (18%).

While credit cards may be popular for financing unaffordable purchases and possibly racking up rewards, they can also be a source of stress if not managed responsibly. Our survey revealed that non-mortgage debt payments—such as credit card, student loan and personal loan payments—are a top financial concern for nearly 20% of Canadians.

A generous credit card offer can help you get ahead of debt and get rewarded for your spending. Compare welcome bonuses to find the best one for you.
