What are cryptocurrency treasuries

Traditionally companies maintain their balance sheets with cash, stocks, real estate and sometimes assets like gold. But more recently firms have started adding cryptocurrencies including bitcoin, ethereum and solana to their reserves as part of their treasury strategy.

These are called cryptocurrency treasury companies and they’ve become a hot topic in the investing world, for good reason.

There are several reasons a company might invest in a cryptocurrency like bitcoin. Some firms see the value in investing in a growth asset to combat against inflation, or to bolster their balance sheets.

Many see it as a way to publicly align with the cryptocurrency eco-system. They’re positioning themselves as future focused and crypto-integrated.

Why would you invest in a cryptocurrency treasury?

Buying stock in a crypto treasury can be an alternative to investing in the crypto itself, without needing to sign up to an exchange. For example, a firm that holds large amounts of bitcoin will often see its stock price loosely track the price of bitcoin.

Companies that have added crypto treasuries to their balance sheet are also cementing their belief in the future of crypto and their readiness to be at the forefront of that evolving technology. This can be a major drawcard for investors that align with these views.

For active traders, it can be advantageous to track the movements of these treasuries to capitalize on price swings triggered by coin volatility, major sell or buy actions or news events.

What types of companies are adding crypto to their balance sheet?

Companies of all shapes and sizes are buying up cryptocurrencies, however the companies investors are most interested in are typically major firms trading on a stock exchange.

Publicly traded companies: Firms that list on major stock exchanges—such as Coinbase and Tesla in the US, or Hut 8 Mining and Galaxy Digital on the TSX in Canada—are required to disclose their cryptocurrency holdings in financial filings like earnings or treasury reports to provide transparency for investors and signal the company’s strategic alignment with crypto.

Private companies: Startups and large private firms may also hold cryptocurrency, particularly those building DeFi or Web3 products. However, because private firms in the US and Canada aren’t required to make their financial statements publicly available, their holdings are harder to track.

ETFs and funds: Because spot Bitcoin ETFs have been available in Canada since 2021, Canadian investors have access to a number of cryptocurrency ETFs both in Canada and globally, including the Purpose Bitcoin ETF (TSX:BTCC) and CI Galaxy Bitcoin ETF (TSX:BTCX.B) along with several Ethereum and multi-crypto funds.

How to compare crypto treasury companies

The amount of crypto held by a company is just one part of the equation. It’s also important to understand how and why it fits into their overall financial strategy.

  • Crypto as a % of total assets: This helps show how heavily the company is invested in crypto.
  • Timing and price: Did they buy the crypto before it surged or after a dip?
  • Use case: Are they holding ETH passively or using it to earn yield via staking or DeFi?
  • Transparency: Does the company regularly report its ETH holdings and explain its strategy?
  • Impact on price of stock: How do ETH price swings affect the company’s market performance?

Pros and cons of investing in crypto treasuries

Pros

  • Crypto treasuries are investing in the future of crypto, which may align with your beliefs
  • They are an alternative to investing directly in a cryptocurrency without needing to sign up to an exchange
  • Tracking their movements may give active traders an edge to better capitalize on price action
  • In Canada, regulated crypto ETFs offer daily disclosure of holdings, which provides more transparency than some US alternatives

Cons

  • Crypto treasuries may be especially volatile as they’re reacting to both traditional equity and crypto market events
  • While investing in crypto treasuries can be an alternative to buying crypto, stock movements can massively diverge from crypto prices
  • While ETFs in Canada are more transparent, individual company treasuries are still only reported periodically and companies can choose to make huge crypto purchase or sell orders at the drop of a hat without informing stockholders for some time
  • Company treasuries can be hard to track as companies are only required to publicly disclose their holdings every few months
