Credit card concierge service

A concierge service offers cardholders a range of assistance for their special entertainment, travel and shopping requests.

Credit card concierge services are fairly standard on most premium and luxury credit cards. This credit card perk allows the cardholder to access a personalized service in their own language, at any time of the day or night, anywhere in the world. But what exactly can a concierge service do for you as a cardholder? And what are the best credit card concierge services available on the market? Learn everything you need to know in this guide.

What is a credit card concierge service?

A concierge service is a complimentary service offered by your credit card provider that can handle your special requests. Usually they are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and can be reached by calling a phone number provided by your credit card company. You’ll typically find complimentary concierge services with premium and luxury credit cards.

What kind of assistance does a concierge service offer?

The types of services will likely depend on the concierge service in question, however you can typically expect your service to offer help with:

  • Booking flights, hotels, restaurant reservations and meeting spaces.
  • Checking on flights, providing directions around a city, providing hotel and travel information.
  • Purchasing gifts and delivering them on your behalf.
  • Purchasing and delivering tickets to concerts, sporting events, shows, etc.
  • Mailing and faxing items.
  • Sending flowers.
  • Booking appointments for haircuts, massages, dentists, etc.
  • Car rentals, bookings and roadside assistance.
  • Organizing events.
  • Locating a special item.

How does a credit card concierge service work?

First, you need to ensure that your credit card offers a complimentary concierge service. You can find this out a number of ways including calling the provider, visiting its website or reading the product reviews on Finder Canada. If you have the service, your credit card provider will give you a list of phone numbers you can contact in order to make your requests and access your concierge service.

You will be informed of the costs and options – if there are any – before booking or making a purchase that you request. The concierge service will not charge any costs unless you’ve approved them. Some high-tier concierge services also come with an app, letting you put your requests in writing as you go.

Your concierge will notify you about the details of your request, such as the time it will take for your items to be delivered or the details of your restaurant reservation. If your request will take awhile to complete, your concierge will notify you of the date and time as to when it will be completed.

What are the types of credit card concierge services?

There are a few types of credit card concierge services dedicated to your particular credit card. Depending on what level your credit card is, the number of concierge services available to you could be different. For example, American Express has a rewards concierge available exclusively to eligible American Express credit cards.

Platinum concierge. This is the standard concierge service to cover all types of personal assistance including flight information, sourcing, purchasing and delivery of tickets for a show, concert or sporting event, providing details of events and shows in your city, hotel and travel information, as well as reservations for restaurants. These services are on a referral or arrangement basis and any third party expenses will be the cardholder’s responsibility.

Rewards concierge. A rewards concierge offers certain cardmembers a personal concierge service using their Membership Rewards points if applicable. Rewards concierges can organize your requests by spending your Membership Rewards points instead of sending you a bill to pay.

Which types of credit cards come with concierge service?

A concierge service is typically only offered on premium credit cards that come with high annual fees. But if used often, the service can be a convenient way to receive assistance, whether you’re at home or overseas. You can request everything from travel recommendations and bookings to dining and meeting space reservations, help finding and sending gifts or flowers, and much more.

Many of the big banks in Canada offer a concierge service for their credit card users. For example, the BMO concierge service, the BMO World Elite concierge service and the TD Visa Infinite concierge service. However, not all of the credit cards offered by big banks include concierge services, as it’s mostly reserved for the top tier cards. Be sure to double check with your bank before signing up for a new credit card.

Best concierge services by credit card

Want to know where the best local restaurant is and what its hours are? A concierge service can provide you with recommendations. Looking to book a flight and accommodation? With a simple phone call, a concierge service can book both. These are just a couple of the many services a credit card concierge service provides. Whether you’re at home or travelling to another country, a concierge service can assist you with your questions and needs – you can think of it as your 24/7 personal assistant.

How to compare credit card concierge services

In most cases, the credit card holder will not be able to choose the type of concierge service that comes with their card. Here are some things that your concierge should be providing:

  • Lifestyle services. This should cover all types of personal assistance and lifestyle requests not limited to but including; car rental, limousine and car service information, mailing and faxing packages, vacation information, shopping information, floral arrangements, party planning and arrangement for hairstylists, fitness trainers and massages.
  • Charges. All concierge services should provide you with detailed information of any costs that accompany your request. You are not charged for the research performed by the concierge service, however you’re typically responsible for the following; cost and delivery of the goods and services purchased, any deposits you’ve put down for the item, costs of cancellation, custom duties and any other costs incurred to fulfil your request.

Pros and cons of credit card concierge services

Pros

  • Concierge services can help with a variety of tasks such as booking a meeting space, helping to organize events that you don’t have the time or know-how to organize yourself, or tracking down some special items – whether they’re in your city or overseas.
  • Credit card concierge services can be used for less obvious purposes such as asking for gift ideas, booking or checking on a flight, arranging for a new passport or travellers cheques, requesting directions around a new city, and much more.
  • If you’re looking to have a night out at a popular and busy restaurant, you may be better off leaving that to a credit card concierge service as they have good relationships with these types of establishments. For example, the American Express concierge service has connections with over 1,200 restaurants around the world.
  • Calling a credit card concierge service allows you to speak to a human straight away, and you can leave your request with them.

Cons

  • High annual fee. Most credit cards that have a complimentary concierge service usually come with a high annual fee, as this feature is normally available with high end premium and luxury credit cards only.

What to avoid with credit card concierge services

A concierge service shouldn’t be the only factor in deciding which credit card is most suitable for your needs. While this feature is handy, you do pay for it within your credit card’s high annual fee. Concierge services are designed for those who don’t have enough time to do their requests themselves.
