Earn up to $450 a year in cashback rewards on your everyday purchases from TopCashback.

TopCashback Logo

TopCashback is a cashback platform that started in the United Kingdom but has since expanded to North America, allowing users to earn money back on eligible online purchases. The platform partners with thousands of retailers in industries like travel, tech, beauty and banking, and it advertises a 100% commission-back model to users instead of keeping a cut.

I tested out the platform myself to see if it’s legit, and it is. You won’t make a fortune, but it’s a simple way to earn up to $450 a year on purchases you were probably already making.

What is TopCashback?

TopCashback is a free cashback platform that started in the United Kingdom in 2005 and expanded to the United States in 2011. It was and still is tailored to Americans, but Canadians can use the platform as well. It lets you earn money back when you shop through its website or app or use its browser extension.

The platform partners with over 7,000 retailers in the United States and Canada and earns a commission when you click through its links, then shares that commission with you. Unlike other cashback sites, TopCashback advertises a 100% commission-back model, so it passes the full referral commission as cashback to users instead of keeping a cut. The platform instead makes money through partnerships with retailers, on-site advertising and sponsored content.

Is TopCashback Canada legit?

Yes, TopCashback is a legitimate cashback platform. It’s operated by TopCashback Limited, a registered company in the United Kingdom, and has a U.S. presence through TopCashback USA Inc., a legally incorporated business in New Jersey. The platform has been around for over two decades, partnering with thousands of reputable retailers and has high ratings on sites like Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

How much can you earn on TopCashback?

Your earnings depend on how much you spend and which retailers you use, but typical cashback rates range from 0.5% to 16.16%.

That being said, TopCashback says you can earn an average of $450 a year if you shop through the platform at least twice a month.

What I like about TopCashback

  • No minimum withdrawal. TopCashback doesn’t set a minimum payout for PayPal, so you can withdraw any amount as soon as your cashback becomes payable. However, retailers must confirm your transaction before cashback becomes payable, which can take 6 to 23 weeks, and there’s a minimum withdrawal of $5 to $10 for certain eGift cards.
  • Declined transactions will show in your account. This may not seem like a good thing, but I liked knowing when a transaction I made wasn’t eligible for cashback, so I wasn’t just waiting around for money to appear in a few weeks.
  • Mobile app. TopCashback has a mobile app available for Android and iOS devices. I didn’t use it to shop, but I tested it out, and it has all the same features as the website, including browsing retailers, activating cashback offers, tracking pending rewards and managing payouts.
  • Browser extension. I liked TopCashback’s browser extension more than its website or mobile app because it alerted me to deals and cashback offers as soon as I went on a partner’s website. This meant I didn’t miss any rewards and barely had to change the way I shopped online.
  • High cashback rates. TopCashback gives 100% of the commission it earns from retailers, which means you typically get higher cashback than what many competitors offer. I noticed this when I was looking at an eSIM card from Airalo, as Rakuten was offering 4% cashback, but TopCashback was offering 8.08%.
  • Free to use. It’s free to sign up for and use TopCashback with no hidden fees, even when withdrawing your rewards.
  • Cashback guarantee. TopCashback promises to beat any competing U.S.-based cashback offer by 10%. For example, if another site is offering $20 cashback on a hotel booking, TopCashback will give you $22 for the same purchase.

The downsides of using TopCashback

  • Tailored to the United States. On its North American website, TopCashback’s terms and conditions state it’s aimed towards American consumers, which means most of its partner retailers are based in the United States, and rewards are only paid in USD. That being said, there’s a section for Canadian retailers, and you will likely earn more CAD because of the favourable exchange rate, but you may lose on currency conversion.
  • Only accepts U.S. bank accounts. Since TopCashback is tailored to Americans, most withdrawal methods are as well. You need a U.S. bank account for bank transfers, so you’ll have to opt for PayPal or an eGift card that’s valid in Canada.
  • Cashback takes a long time. Rewards can take weeks or even months to become payable. My cashback hasn’t become payable yet, so I can’t speak to how long it actually takes, but it varies by retailer.
  • No sign-up bonus. Unlike competitors, TopCashback doesn’t offer a sign-up bonus to new users. This is because it offers 100% of its commission to users, helping them save more in the long run.

My experience with TopCashback: How it works

I tested out TopCashback myself by purchasing a tour on Viator that I was already thinking of booking. When I looked at the tour directly on Viator, it was $62. When I looked at it through TopCashback the same day, it was $51, helping me save even more.

When I made the purchase, TopCashback was offering 15% cashback to new Viator users and 8% to existing users. Since I’ve used Viator before, I earned 8% cashback on my $37.84 purchase, which came to $3.03. Viator charged me in CAD, but TopCashback converted it to USD before calculating my cashback.

Here’s what making a purchase through TopCashback was like:

My experience with TopCashback’s browser extension

I also downloaded TopCashback’s browser extension, which took less than a minute, to test it out. It shows cashback offers on partner websites before you even click on them to start shopping. And when you’re on the website, you can see TopCashback’s offer as well as its exclusions, so you know what purchases are eligible for cashback.

I found the browser extension easier to use than TopCashback’s website or app because offers automatically popped up, making sure I didn’t miss any cashback opportunities.

What are the ways to earn?

TopCashback doesn’t offer a sign-up bonus like other cashback platforms do, but there are other ways to earn some extra cash through the platform.

Shopping

The primary way to earn with TopCashback is by shopping through its partner retailers. Head to the TopCashback website or app, search for a retailer and click the link to be redirected to their site. After you make a qualifying purchase, your cashback should appear in your account as pending in 48 hours. Once the retailer confirms the transaction, the cashback will become payable, and you can withdraw it.

Browser extension

Instead of shopping through TopCashback’s website or app, you can install the browser extension to get notified of cashback opportunities while browsing your favourite stores. It automatically notifies you of deals, ensuring you never miss out on rewards.

Referral bonus

When a friend signs up for TopCashback using your unique link and earns $10 in cashback within 180 days, you’ll receive a $40 bonus. There’s no limit to how many friends you can refer, so you can keep stacking up bonuses.

How do I get paid?

TopCashback only offers two withdrawal methods to Canadians: PayPal and eGift card, and not all gift cards are available to Canadians. If you want to see your withdrawal methods, navigate to your account, select Cash Out, and you’ll be able to see your options, as well as the minimum cash-out required for each one. You can choose to withdraw only a portion of your cash back if you want multiple gift cards or want to split your rewards between gift cards and a PayPal deposit.

What do people say about TopCashback?

On platforms like Trustpilot and the BBB, TopCashback generally receives positive reviews. Many users say it offers higher cashback rates than competitors and has transparent tracking, which I agree with, as even my declined cashback rewards appeared in my account.

The main complaints about TopCashback seem to be that it can take a long time for rewards to become payable, and some transactions were declined for cashback. Like I said, I didn’t receive the cashback I expected on my DoorDash transaction, but that was because I used another promotion code at the same time, which TopCashback clearly states will void cashback rewards.

TopCashback responds to most reviews and offers users an explanation for why their cashback was voided and a contact email to discuss any other issues further.

What does Reddit say about TopCashback?

Reddit users have a lot of positive things to say about TopCashback as well, like it’s a legit way to earn extra money on everyday purchases, and customer support is helpful. Some Redditors even offer tips for earning more or making sure your cashback is tracked properly, like disabling ad blockers and stacking offers from TopCashback and the retailer when you can (just be sure to read the terms and conditions first).

Again, the main complaint on Reddit seems to be that it takes a while for cashback to become payable.

How does TopCashback make money?

Most cashback platforms earn money by keeping a portion of the commission they earn from retailers and paying the rest to users. But TopCashback gives 100% of its commission back to users. It stays profitable by leveraging sponsored posts, site advertisements, and direct brand partnerships.

Verdict: Is TopCashback worth it?

From my experience, TopCashback is definitely worth using if you shop online regularly. I appreciated the high cashback rates, the convenient browser extension and the fact that there’s no minimum payout for PayPal. I also liked that you can see how much cashback you earned within hours of your purchase, even though it can take weeks (or even months) for it to become payable.

Although most features are geared toward U.S. users, I plan to continue to use it alongside my other cashback platforms, especially since I can just keep the browser extension running in the background while I shop as I normally would.

Bottom line

TopCashback is a reliable cashback platform that makes it easy to earn extra money on online purchases. It offers no fees, a handy browser extension and high cashback rates, plus a guarantee to beat other U.S.-based cashback offers. It can take weeks for some rewards to become payable and is more U.S.-focused, but I’m going to continue using it to get a little money back on my purchases. Just know that it won’t replace a source of income, but there are plenty of other ways to make money online in Canada.
