COVID-19 self-testing kits are either nucleic acid-based testing (PCR tests) or antigen-based testing (rapid tests) testing kits that can be used at home. With at home PCR tests, you simply purchase a kit and set an online appointment with a health specialist to collect your sample. You then send the sample to the company so that it can be processed.
With rapid tests, you simply place a saliva sample or nasal swab into a chemical solution and wait for the results to show up. Results usually take less than 20 minutes. However, these tests are not as accurate as PCR tests and may give false positive or negative results, which means not all rapid antigen tests are approved for travel.
Rapid antigen tests are acceptable for travel if taken under the supervision of a professional and taken within 1 day of entering or exiting Canada.

In most provinces, anyone who needs a test under the province’s specific testing guidelines can get a rapid antigen test or, if deemed necessary, a PCR test at no cost. This depends on the rules of province where you live and you must meet its criteria in order to be eligible for a free test. Free home tests are also subject to availability. For specific provincial information, check out our guides below:
You may also be able to get free rapid antigen COVID tests for your business or organization from the Government of Canada and some provincial/territorial governments.
Large businesses that qualify for free tests and have 200+ employees will be supplied by the federal government. Businesses that qualify and have 0-199 employees will be supplied by provincial/territorial governments. Registered charities, non-profit and Indigenous organizations will be supplied by the Red Cross.
