How do rewards credit cards work?

A rewards credit card typically allows you to earn miles, points or cash back for your spending. Depending on the card, you may earn a flat-rate of cash back or points per $1 spent, or you might earn accelerated rewards on specific spending categories such as gas, groceries and dining, and then less points or cash back on other types of spending.

While cash back is most often returned directly into your bank account or sent to you as a cheque in the mail, rewards points can typically be used a variety of ways. You might be able to use your points for travel, merchandise, statement credit, gift cards and more. Miles, on the other hand, can usually only be redeemed for travel or travel-related experiences.

Typically, the number of points or miles you earn can be roughly converted to an equivalent dollar amount, but it’s not usually a 1:1 ratio. Instead, you might earn $1 in rewards for every 100 points you earn on your card.

The 6 types of rewards credit cards in Canada

When you’re trying to decide what the best rewards credit card is for your needs, you should first consider what type of card you should get. You should chose a rewards card based on your spending habits and how you intend to use the card.

For example, if you travel a lot, it would make sense to get a credit card that comes with travel insurance and points that you can redeem towards discounts on flights. Alternatively, if you tend to spend a lot eating out, you could get a credit card that offers accelerated rewards on restaurant purchases. Check out the list of the 6 types of rewards credit cards available in Canada below to help narrow down your options:

Grey and blue icon of hand holding dollar sign

1. Cashback

You’ll receive a percentage of all eligible purchases you make on your card back as cash, which can either be deposited directly in your bank account or used to pay down your credit card balance.

Airplane Traveling Icon

2. Travel

Whether it’s through the Air Miles program, or bank affiliated programs like Avion or Aventura, you can use your credit card to build up points towards travel discounts on flights, car rentals and more.

Shopping Bag Icon

3. Retail

Some rewards credit cards in Canada are offered through specific retailers, allowing you to earn points every time you shop at your favourite store. You can often redeem your points for in-store discounts or even travel rewards.

Gas and dining icon

4. Category-specific

In addition to a basic points value on all purchases, some rewards credit cards allow you to earn accelerated points or cash back when you spend on specific categories like gas, groceries or restaurants.

Hotel Icon

5. Hotel

These types of rewards credit cards are ideal for the frequent traveler. Hotel credit cards offer bonus points when you spend with certain hotel chains. You’ll often be able to redeem your points for hotel stays and travel packages.

Business Briefcase Icon

6. Business

Business rewards credit cards help you earn points on business expenses like office supplies, business trips and internet. These rewards cards also tend to come with added perks like free additional cardholders for employees and travel insurance.

Travel credit cards

Credit cards that allow you to earn travel points work in the same way that standard rewards cards do. You accumulate points when you spend money on your card, and these points can be used to book flights and hotels or lock in discounts on other travel experiences. Every card will offer a different number of points per dollar spent, as well as a different conversion rate depending on the rewards program it belongs to.

For example, one credit card might offer 10 points per $1 spent, with 250,000 points converting to $500 in rewards. This means you’ll need to spend $25,000 on your card to earn $500 in redeemable travel credit. Another card might offer 2 points per $1 spent, with 50,000 points converting to $500, which also adds up to $25,000 in spending. Even though the earn rate is lower with the second card, the points are much more valuable, making the second card a much better choice for earning travel credit.

Before choosing a card, be sure to do the math on conversion rates and remember that a higher number of points doesn’t necessarily mean more money at the end of the day.

What types of rewards can you earn with a travel points credit cards?

  • Frequent flyer miles. AIR MILES and Aeroplan Miles are the two most common travel rewards programs in Canada. Using a credit card linked to one of these loyalty programs will earn you points towards your balance.
  • Rewards points. Rewards points allow you to exchange points with your credit card provider to book travel. Some cards offer a flat-rate of points per dollar spent, while others will give you an accelerated number of points for specific purchases (like gas, groceries or dining out).

What to watch out for with travel reward points

  • Expiration dates. Your points may expire if you don’t use them within a certain time period, so make sure you know when you need to redeem them by.
  • Blackout dates. There’s nothing worse than finding out you can’t travel on the dates you want. Make sure your points won’t limit when you can travel.
  • Caps on rewards. Avoid providers that cap your earnings once you spend a certain amount of money.
  • Excluded purchases. Some providers don’t offer travel points on certain purchases (like cash advance transactions) so it pays to check into what’s covered and what isn’t.

Frequent travellers looking for discounts on flights – along with an array of travel-related perks – are most likely to benefit from a travel reward points credit card. These cards often come with benefits like comprehensive travel insurance coverage and concierge services to help you save money when you go abroad. You’ll usually get the most benefits and a higher return on points if you opt for a card with an annual fee.

How to choose the best rewards credit card for you

When browsing through the best rewards credit cards in Canada to find the best one for you, consider the following factors:

  • Look for the best rewards points conversion rate. When it comes to rewards programs, they are not all created equally. Compare rewards programs to find out which offers the best points to travel credit conversion. More points doesn’t necessarily mean more money in the long run.
  • Welcome offers. Many rewards credit cards in Canada come with a large welcome points bonus. These welcome bonuses can often be enough to get hundreds of dollars’ worth of rewards before you’ve even started using your card.
  • Annual fee. Figure out whether your annual fee outweighs your return on rewards. If you don’t spend much on your card, it makes sense to opt for a no-free rewards credit card. However, higher earn rates usually come with cards that charge an annual fee.
  • Interest rates. You’ll want to look for rewards credit cards that offer no more than the typical purchase interest rate of 19.99% and cash advance rate of 21.99%. If you can find a rewards credit card with an even lower than average interest rate, you could save money if you ever intend to maintain an outstanding balance on your card.
  • Ask about foreign exchange fees. This is important to keep in mind if you’re planning to get a travel rewards credit card. Most credit cards charge a foreign transaction fee of 2.5%, however, there are a few cards on the market in Canada that come with no foreign transaction fees – saving you $2.50 for every $100 you spend overseas.
  • Other fees. Make sure to read your contract fully and pay attention to fees for services like cash advances fees. Look for the card that doesn’t charge for the services you use regularly.
  • Provider. Many different providers offer contenders for the best rewards credit cards in Canada. Whether it’s from a big bank, digital bank or private company, look for a rewards card from a provider you trust and one that you can conveniently access when you need to.
  • Comprehensive benefits. A good rule of thumb is to find a card that offers basic insurance (like purchase protection and extended warranty coverage) as well as extra benefits like travel insurance – but only if you’re going to use them.

Should I get a rewards credit card?

While the idea of getting cashback or rewards points on your everyday purchases may seem like a good idea across the board, rewards credit cards aren’t the best idea for everyone. If you’re one of the 59% of Canadians carrying a credit card balance you could easily end up paying more in interest than you’re getting back in rewards. In that case, you may want to consider a low interest rate credit card or a balance transfer card to help you save money as you pay off the balance on your card.

On the other hand, if you pay off your balance every month a rewards credit card could be a great way to benefit from your everyday expenses.
