How much does it cost to transfer money with WorldRemit?

WorldRemit offers guaranteed exchange rates when you need to send money overseas. These rates are updated daily to reflect changing market conditions and generally compare favorably to the rates available from major Canadian banks. Compare WorldRemit’s exchange rates with those of your bank to see how they stack up against each other.

The fee you’ll pay to send your money overseas with WorldRemit depends on the amount that you send, where you send it and how your recipient will access the money.

For example, you’ll pay $3.99 CAD for a bank deposit of $1,000 to France, while sending the same amount via bank transfer to India will run you $6.99 CAD.

Available currencies

WorldRemit sends money to over 145 countries worldwide, although the transfer types vary depending on the country. Some of the more popular currencies that WorldRemit lets you send to are:

  • INR Indian rupee
  • VND Vietnamese dong
  • GBP British pound
  • PHP Philippine peso
  • LBP Lebanese pound
  • EUR Euro
  • LKR Sri Lankan rupee
  • THB Thai baht

What types of transfers can I make with WorldRemit?

Although it varies from country to country, WorldRemit offers a range of ways you can send money, including:

  • Mobile wallet. Send to your recipient’s smartphone wallet. This option is helpful if your recipient doesn’t have a bank account and isn’t near a cash pick-up location.
  • Cash pick-up. You can send money to a cash pick-up location for your recipient to collect. If you choose this option, the person picking it up will need valid photo ID on hand and the reference number.
  • Bank transfer. The money will be deposited directly in the bank account you choose. You’ll need to know their SWIFT code as well.
  • Airtime top-up. This is used when you want to send money directly to your recipient’s mobile to top up their pre-paid plan. Credit top-ups are often instant. Quite a few of WorldRemit’s countries only offer airtime top-up.
  • Door-to-door delivery (currently only available for transfers to Vietnam). Instead of picking up the cash at a fixed location, this option means your cash is delivered physically to your recipient’s home. The recipient must present valid ID as well as the WorldRemit transaction reference number or the driver will not give them the cash.

Unfortunately, WorldRemit does not offer the flexibility of rate locks, forward contracts or recurring transfers.

Pros and cons of using WorldRemit

  • Competitive fees. The fees are generally quite a lot less than what you’ll find at your bank.
  • Easy-to-use website and app. We were able to sign up and start a transfer in about five minutes.
  • No minimum transfer. With no minimum, WorldRemit is best suited to smaller transfers.
  • Flexible options. You can pay with a range of options including card, bank transfer or Android Pay. Your recipient can also receive the money in a number of ways.
  • Worldwide network. Customers in 50 countries can send funds to more than 145 countries, providing global access when you need to transfer money abroad.

  • Limited maximum transfer. You can’t send more than $4,000 CAD at a time if you’re using card or Apple/Android Pay, and you can’t send more than $40,000 CAD in a single 24-hour period.
  • Some payment methods not accepted (including cash). Currently, you cannot pay for international money transfers using cash, AMEX, Diners Card or Union Pay.
  • Government-issued ID required. After your first transfer, you’ll need to upload a copy of your license or passport, which could deter those without one. If you’re sending $1,000 CAD or more, you will be required to upload additional documentation.
  • No live-chat. If you have questions, you’ll either need to call or fill out an online form.

Is WorldRemit safe to use?

  • Security and regulation: Government regulated, can enable 2-factor authentication
  • Established: 2010.
  • Number of customers: Over 4 million.*
  • Reviews: TrustPilot gives WorldRemit a score of 9.2 out of 10, based on over 26,000 reviews*
  • Investors: Accel, TCV, LeapFrog
*According to WorldRemit and Trustpilot as of 17 April, 2019.

WorldRemit is regulated in Canada by FINTRAC (Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada), which regulates finance companies. This means WorldRemit has to keep its clients’ money separate from its own funds, so you’re protected if WorldRemit runs into financial difficulties.

Two-factor authentication is a setting you can put on your account which requires two types of verification when logging in. This adds another layer of protection against anyone trying to hack into your account.

How does WorldRemit make money?

WorldRemit makes its money off of both fees and the margin it charges on exchange rates. The fee varies from currency to currency, but most are around the $3.99 mark.

WorldRemit, like most other providers, also adds a margin onto the exchange rate. This is why the exchange rate you get quoted varies from company to company, and also from what you can see on Google or XE.

For example, WorldRemit may quote you CAD$1= PHP 38 for a money transfer to the Philippines, while the rate you can see on Google is CAD$1 = PHP 38.70. In this case, WorldRemit is pocketing 0.70 PHP for every Canadian dollar you send (only about 1.84% of the total transfer amount) in order to cover the cost of operating. This is a common revenue-gathering practice among money transfer companies.

WorldRemit does not charge any additional fees based on your particular payment method, however, your bank or card issuer might charge foreign conversion fees if your payment is from outside of Canada (as would be the case if you pay with a credit card from another country).

How do I use WorldRemit?

Before you send money with WorldRemit, make sure you have the following information:

  • A valid payment method. Your bank account, credit card or debit card information. You can also pay with Apple Pay and Android Pay (see payment methods).
  • Your recipient’s name and contact information. If you’re transferring money to a bank account, you’ll also need the recipient’s bank information including the correct bank account number.

It’s helpful to create an account before initiating a transfer, but you can enter your transfer info into the website first to learn just how much the transfer will cost.

How can the recipient details be modified? Coz I am the recipient but I was not aware that my bank account, which is a BDO Cash Card is not capable of receiving International Remittances. Thus it needs to be amended as “Pick Up” or it can be cancelled and create a new transaction instead? How much is the service charges? Please Help. The sender is from Sydney, Australia. The recipient is from the Philippines.

    Thank you so much!

    Hoping for your prompt action.

hello, i am sending money to KATHMANDU, where would my receiver collect amount from..? Can it be collected from IME if it is cash pickup or is there any branches to collect amount..?

      August 8, 2016

      Hi Bidhan,

      Thanks for your comment.

Unfortunately we do not have any further information on IME, however most money transfer services allow you to pick how the money will be received -whether via transfer, online or pickup. To my knowledge IME allows you to send your cash so that the receiver picks it up from any IME agents. You can also read about how money transfers work and compare other services on our International Money Transfer page.

Please note, we are a comparison website and provide general advice only.

      Hope that helps.

      Hi Romey,

      Thanks for your question.

The methods for receiving cash will depend on where you’re sending the money. Unfortunately, only bank transfer and air time is available as methods for receiving cash in Nigeria. For places where cash pick up is offered, the table on this page will show you relevant pick up locations.

      Hope this helps.

      Hi Romey,

      Thanks for your comment.

If you were able to successfully initiate a money transfer, your recipient should receive an SMS message containing the transaction number and directions of how to collect the funds. Additionally, Worldremit will also send you an SMS once your beneficiary has received the money.

The pickup location in Nigeria depends on the Worldremit service that you use. If bank transfer, your recipient can claim it at a local branch. If through Airtime, the funds can be claimed through Airtel, Etisalat, GLO, MTN, and Visafone.

I hope this answers your question.
