While there are plenty of streaming services out there, few of them focus on sport. As a result, if you like to watch a lot of live sporting events, you usually need to invest in a cable subscription. However, alternatives do exist and fuboTV is one of them. The platform offers a limited selection of sports channels and enables users to watch live or record events to catch up later. You can watch on a variety of devices, including smartphones – especially great if you’re on the go when your favourite team is playing.
fuboTV is an over-the-top streaming TV service that enables users to watch channels live. It was founded back in 2015 with a small offering of soccer content, but eventually grew to become a broader streaming service. In the US, it added entertainment into the mix, making it a true alternative to a traditional cable subscription. In Canada, only sports channels are available so far.
Users pay a monthly fee and can live stream a limited selection of sports channels. It’s just like watching regular TV, only you’ll do it over the Internet. The platform also enables you to record events to watch later – that way, if you have to miss a game, you can catch up as soon as your schedule clears up. There’s a limit to the amount of content you can record, since your subscription comes with a set amount of storage in the cloud, but that can be resolved by purchasing an add-on to your regular subscription.
In Canada, fuboTV costs $15.99/month for the basic Canadian package. This includes access to beIN SPORTS, beIN SPORTS Canada, beIN SPORTS ñ, fuboTV, Benfica TV, Fight Network and FNTSY. If you’re a cycling fan you can add fubo Cycling for an extra $11.99/month. It comes with live coverage of Giro d’Italia, Flanders Classic and more. A free seven-day trial is available for new customers, so you can experience the platform and see if it’s for you.
fuboTV was originally a great investment for soccer fans, with beIN SPORTS offering coverage of several leagues around the world. Though DAZN has now pulled the rug out from underneath them landing Serie A, UEFA Champions League, Europa League, Premier League and more. fuboTV is now left with La Liga, Ligue 1, Turkish Super Lig and others.
As we’ve already mentioned, fuboTV expanded in the US to offer entertainment programming besides sports content. In Canada, you’ll only get access to the channels listed above. You can watch live or record content. If you choose the latter, you can record any live programs on most channels either before or during the program’s airing.
A basic subscription comes with 30 hours of storage, which should be more than enough for the average user. If you want to take things to the next level, you can boost your Cloud PVR space to 500 hours for an extra $9.99/month. The recordings will be available to you indefinitely.
On the same note, fuboTV offers a Lookback feature that lets users watch previously aired content for up to 72 hours after the program’s original air time. That’s great if you forget to set up the service to record something you were really keen on seeing. The feature is available on the fuboTV website, Apple TV and Android mobile app.
Each streaming service burns data. If you have an unlimited plan, that isn’t a problem. If you have an Internet plan with a set data allowance per month, you should keep an eye on your usage.
On average, an hour of HD streaming can use up to 3GB of data. You should be mindful of watching fuboTV while on mobile networks, since streaming a lot of video can lead to extra charges from your provider. Better take advantage of the recording and Lookback features.
fuboTV works with a wide variety of devices, so you can always be connected to your favourite competitions. You can stream on two devices at the same time. The list includes:
