While there are plenty of streaming services out there, few of them focus on sport. As a result, if you like to watch a lot of live sporting events, you usually need to invest in a cable subscription. However, alternatives do exist and fuboTV is one of them. The platform offers a limited selection of sports channels and enables users to watch live or record events to catch up later. You can watch on a variety of devices, including smartphones – especially great if you’re on the go when your favourite team is playing.

What is fuboTV?

fuboTV is an over-the-top streaming TV service that enables users to watch channels live. It was founded back in 2015 with a small offering of soccer content, but eventually grew to become a broader streaming service. In the US, it added entertainment into the mix, making it a true alternative to a traditional cable subscription. In Canada, only sports channels were available initially, but it has since added some entertainment options via GameTV and the Paramount Network.

Users pay a monthly, quarterly or annual fee and can live stream a selection of sports and entertainment channels. It’s just like watching regular TV, only you’ll do it over the Internet. The platform also enables you to record events to watch later – that way, if you have to miss a game, you can catch up as soon as your schedule clears up. There’s a limit to the amount of content you can record, since your subscription comes with a set amount of storage in the cloud, but that can be resolved by purchasing an add-on to your regular subscription.

How much content does fuboTV offer?

fuboTV was originally a great investment for soccer fans, with beIN SPORTS offering coverage of several leagues around the world. DAZN then somewhat pulled the rug out from underneath them by landing the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, Premier League and more. fuboTV also lost La Liga to TSN/RDS.

But fuboTV is still a major player in this field, evidenced by it regaining the Serie A rights from DAZN. It also has Lionel Messi’s new home Ligue 1, Turkish Super Lig, Copa Sudamericana, Copa Libertadores and more. There’s also Canadian World Cup qualifiers plus other sports like MLB Network.

As we’ve already mentioned, fuboTV expanded in the US to offer entertainment programming besides sports content. In Canada, you’ll only get access to the channels listed above. You can watch live or record content. If you choose the latter, you can record any live programs on most channels either before or during the program’s airing.

A basic subscription comes with 30 hours of storage, which should be more than enough for the average user. If you want to take things to the next level, you can boost your Cloud PVR space to 500 hours for an extra $9.99/month. The recordings will be available to you indefinitely.

On the same note, fuboTV offers a Lookback feature that lets users watch previously aired content for up to 72 hours after the program’s original air time. That’s great if you forget to set up the service to record something you were really keen on seeing. The feature is available on the fuboTV website, Apple TV and Android mobile app.

How much data will fuboTV use?

Each streaming service burns data. If you have an unlimited plan, that isn’t a problem. If you have an Internet plan with a set data allowance per month, you should keep an eye on your usage.

On average, an hour of HD streaming can use up to 3GB of data. You should be mindful of watching fuboTV while on mobile networks, since streaming a lot of video can lead to extra charges from your provider. Better take advantage of the recording and Lookback features.

Which devices are compatible with fuboTV?

fuboTV works with a wide variety of devices, so you can always be connected to your favourite competitions. You can stream on two devices at the same time. The list includes:
