Our verdict

WorldRemit is a fast, easy-to-use international transfer service with solid global reach, but its fees and exchange rates aren't as strong as some competitors.

After testing 19 international money transfer services, we found that WorldRemit stands out for its speed and ease of use, with a simple app experience, transparent pricing and a range of payout options, including bank transfer, cash pickup and even mobile top-ups.

In our testing, it offered good rates for transfers of $1,000 or more, especially when compared to traditional banks. However, other fintechs we tested delivered lower rates for both larger and smaller transfers.

Overall, WorldRemit is reliable, has generally positive reviews and allows you to send money to 130+ countries within minutes, but it may not be the cheapest choice.

Pros

  • Transparent fees
  • Multiple payout and delivery methods
  • Easy-to-use app
  • Supports transfers to 130+ countries
  • No minimum transfer amount

Cons

  • Doesn't support Interac e-Transfer
  • Maximum transfer amounts
  • Unpredictable fee structure

What is WorldRemit?

WorldRemit is an international money transfer service that lets customers send money abroad through its mobile app. Founded in London in 2010, the platform now supports transfers from 50+ countries to 130+ destinations worldwide.

You can only fund your transfer with a debit or credit card or Apple Pay, as Google Pay and Interac e-Transfer are no longer supported in Canada. Depending on the destination country, recipients can receive money through a bank transfer, cash pickup, mobile wallet or Airtime top-up for a prepaid mobile phone.

Is WorldRemit legitimate in Canada?

Yes, WorldRemit is a legitimate money transfer provider that’s registered and regulated by the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) through multiple regional entities, including WorldRemit Central Inc. (Ontario), WorldRemit West Inc. (western provinces) and WorldRemit Inc (Quebec). Its Quebec entity is also regulated by the Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF).

Is WorldRemit safe?

Yes, WorldRemit is generally considered safe to use in Canada because it’s a legitimate money transfer company regulated by Canada’s financial intelligence and compliance authority, FINTRAC.

According to WorldRemit’s own security information, customer funds are held in segregated accounts separate from company money, and all users must go through identity verification checks to help prevent fraud.

The platform also uses encryption and continuous transaction monitoring to detect suspicious activity. While it’s not a bank and doesn’t offer deposit insurance like CDIC-protected accounts, these safeguards make it a secure option for sending international money transfers.

A closer look at the pros and cons

Pros

  • Low minimum transfer amount. A varied fee system and a minimum transfer amount of just $1 make it easy to send small transfers.
  • Easy to use. It only takes a few minutes to create an account, and everything can be done on the app.
  • 24/7 customer support. Support is accessible through phone, email, live chat and FAQs.
  • Large range of destinations. Customers in 50+ countries can send funds to recipients in 130+ countries.
  • Variety of payment and delivery options. You can pay using a debit card, credit card or Apple Pay. Recipients can receive money through bank transfers, cash pickup, mobile wallets or Airtime top-ups, depending on the destination country.
  • Fast transfer options. Some transfers, including cash pickup, mobile money transfers and Airtime top-ups, process almost instantly.
  • Transparent pricing. Transfer fees and exchange rates are shown before you confirm a transfer, so you know exactly how much your recipient will receive.
  • Promotions for new users. WorldRemit typically offers free or discounted transfers for new users.
  • Referral program. If you share your referral code with friends and they send a minimum amount using WorldRemit, you'll both earn $5 to $35 CAD, depending on where your referee is located.

Cons

  • Maximum transfer amounts. From Canada, you can only send a maximum of $4,000 CAD in a single transaction or $40,000 CAD in a 24-hour period.
  • Fees can be difficult to predict. Fees and exchange rates vary based on the destination country, payment method, delivery method and amount, making costs less consistent than competitors we reviewed with flat-fee pricing.
  • Doesn't accept Google Pay. WorldRemit accepts Apple Pay, but Google Pay isn't currently available as a payment option for Canadian users.
  • Fewer funding methods. Compared to some other international money transfer providers we tested, WorldRemit offers more limited payment options in Canada, including no support for Interac e-Transfer.

Testing the WorldRemit app to see how much it really charges

To understand how WorldRemit performs on price, we ran a series of test scenarios using transfers from Canada to India and Ukraine with different payment methods. For each scenario, we recorded the exchange rate offered, the mid-market rate and any fees applied, then calculated the total cost markup and compared results across the 18 other international money transfer services we tested.

The results show that WorldRemit’s pricing varies depending on transfer size, destination country and payment method, with limited funding options compared to some competitors.

When sending a $200 money transfer to India, WorldRemit’s cheapest total cost markup came in at 1.81%, placing it in the mid-range of providers. It was cheaper than traditional banks, but not as competitive as low-cost options like Instarem (0.70%) or Pesa (0.53%).

For larger transfers of $1,000, WorldRemit’s cheapest total cost markup improved slightly to 1.05%, which was still lower than traditional banks but not lower than most of the other providers, including Paysend (0.86%) and Pesa (0.53%).

What are WorldRemit’s transfer fees?

WorldRemit’s fees vary depending on the destination country, sending amount, payout method and payment type, just like the other international money transfer services we tried. However, the transfer fees and exchange rate markup are displayed upfront before you confirm a transfer, so you know the total cost before sending.

In general, there’s no additional fee when funding a transfer via bank transfer or debit card, but credit card payments typically incur an extra charge.

To give you an example, here are the fees you can expect to pay if you want to send money to the Philippines:

  • Bank transfer: $0
  • Cash pickup: $3.99
  • Mobile wallet: $1.99
  • Airtime Top-up: $0

Compared to sending money to India:

  • Bank transfer: $1.99
  • Airtime Top-up: $0

We calculated WorldRemit’s cost markup for money transfers

WorldRemit’s cost markup varies by destination country as well as the payment and payout methods used. We calculated its cost markup based on transferring $200 funded by debit card and received via bank transfer (unless otherwise stated) across 10 different countries.

As of May 25, 2026

As you can see in this table, WorldRemit adds an extra cost of about 1% to 8% to your transfer. When you compare that to other services, it is on the higher side.

For example, based on our tests, Pesa adds 0% to 2%, TapTap Send charges 0.50% to 4.3%, and Panda Remit ranges from 1% to 5%.

How long does an international WorldRemit money transfer take?

Transfer times with WorldRemit and the other international money transfer services we tried depend on the destination country, payout method and payment type.

In our testing, many transfers said they would be completed within minutes or within the same day when using mobile wallet delivery, cash pickup or Airtime top-up. Bank deposits generally took longer, ranging from a few hours to several business days, depending on the receiving bank.

WorldRemit clearly displays estimated delivery times before you confirm a transfer, which we found helpful to compare methods.

To give you a better idea of transfer times, here’s what delivery times to the Philippines look like:

  • Bank transfer: Same day
  • Cash pickup: Same day
  • Mobile wallet: Within 1 hour
  • Airtime top-up: Within 5 minutes

What’s it like to use the WorldRemit app?

The WorldRemit app was easy to navigate from sign-up to checkout. Creating an account and identity verification were straightforward. It only took a few minutes to complete each step, and the app conveniently accepted a photo of an ID using the mobile phone camera.

You can initiate a transfer straight from the app’s home screen, and you’ll be able to see the estimated delivery time and transfer fee for each delivery method before you confirm a transfer.

On the app, you can also see your transfer history and contact list, refer friends and access the help centre with 24/7 live chat support.

One standout feature was the ability to set daily exchange rate notifications for up to 3 countries so you could track rate changes and decide when to send money.

What do WorldRemit reviews say?

WorldRemit has generally positive reviews on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store with high ratings, but mixed reviews on Trustpilot.

Most users agree that WorldRemit is easy to use, transfers are often completed quickly, and customer support is helpful when everything is running smoothly.

On the negative side, some reviewers report issues like unexpected account closures, transfers taking longer than expected to arrive and restrictive transfer limits leading to multiple transactions and transfer fees.

Many users also say their transfers were cancelled, then they had to wait days or even weeks for a refund. These users state that when they brought this issue to customer service, they received no response or at least no timeline for when they could expect their money.

How to send money with WorldRemit

Sending a WorldRemit money transfer is easy, but you need the mobile app to do it. Download it, then follow these steps:

  1. Create an account. Select Register and input your email address, password and mobile number to create an account. You can also sign up using your Apple ID or Google account.
  2. Verify your identity. Log in and verify your identity by taking a picture of your ID and a quick selfie video.
  3. Initiate the transfer. Once your account is set up, select Send now on your homepage.
  4. Enter the amount. Enter the amount you want to send in CAD and choose the currency you want your recipient to receive. It will show the amount they’ll receive after fees and exchange rates.
  5. Choose a receiving method. Depending on where you’re sending money to, you can choose bank transfer, cash pickup, mobile money or Airtime top-up.
  6. Enter your recipient’s information. Select Next and choose a recipient from your list or select Add new receiver. You’ll likely have to add your recipient’s full name, address, contact details and account number, depending on the receiving method you chose.
  7. Review the transaction. Review your transaction details, including the amount, transfer fees and exchange rate, then select Next.
  8. Choose your payment method. Choose a payment method from Apple Pay, debit card or credit card for an additional fee and select Pay.

Bottom line

WorldRemit is a convenient and easy-to-use international money transfer service that performed well in speed, simple setup and flexible payout options. In our testing, we found it delivered better value on larger transfers of around $1,000 or more.

That said, WorldRemit’s pricing varies depending on the destination, payment method, delivery method and amount, and we found some competitors offered lower total fees and exchange rate markups across both small and large transfers. Overall, it’s a reliable option with plenty of positive reviews, but not always the cheapest choice depending on where and how much you’re sending.

Hi Shina,

Thanks for your question.

Unfortunately the Worldremit website doesn’t say how it takes. Generally, bank transfers take two to three days while cash pick up and phone transfers are instant.

How can the recipient details be modified? Coz I am the recipient but I was not aware that my bank account, which is a BDO Cash Card is not capable of receiving International Remittances. Thus it needs to be amended as “Pick Up” or it can be cancelled and create a new transaction instead? How much is the service charges? Please Help. The sender is from Sydney, Australia. The recipient is from the Philippines.

Thank you so much!

Hoping for your prompt action.

Truly yours,
