The AFC Champions League, also known as the Asian Champions League, is a club soccer competition open to teams from right across the continent.
Following a series of qualifying matches and criteria, 32 teams make the main tournament, split into 8 groups. They initially compete in a round robin format. The top 2 teams in each group then progress to the knockout rounds.
The group stage of this year’s AFC Champions League got underway in April. The teams play each side in their group home and away.
Round of 16 matches got underway on September 12, 2021 when Iranian team Esteghlal FC took on Saudi Arabian team Al Hilal SFC. Other Round of 16 matches followed on September 13 and 14.
There will be a sprint to the finish for this season’s combatants. The quarter-finals are being held on October 16 and 17, with the semi-finals then held right after that, on October 19-20.
