What types of transfers can you carry out with Western Union?

Western Union offers a wide range of options to send money overseas. Send funds in cash or from your credit card, debit card or bank account to the recipient’s bank account or a mobile phone / prepaid card.

  • Online transfers. Lodge a transfer online via the Western Union website.
  • In-branch transfers. Schedule a transfer by visiting your local Western Union branch – the company has over 3,000 locations in Canada and 500,000+ agent locations worldwide.
  • Cash pick-up. Recipient can pick up funds in cash by visiting a Western Union branch.
  • Transfer to bank account. Funds can be transferred straight into recipient’s bank account.

Login and Transfer Process

Sending money should be as convenient as checking your email or surfing the web. With Western Union, you can send money online 24/7, and your recipient can show up at a Western Union agent location and get cash in hand in minutes, which can be a real lifesaver in case of an emergency. In certain countries, money can also be deposited into a bank account or mobile wallet, although this process can take between 1 and 3 days.

Send money for cash pickup or direct to bank account/mobile wallet:

  1. Log in to your profile. If you don’t have a profile, you can register for free on the Western Union main page (or by following the link [Go to Site] in the table at the top of this page.
  2. Choose country, amount and delivery method (cash).
  3. Enter your receiver’s name or bank account information.
  4. Pay with your credit or debit card.
  5. You’ll get a confirmation by email. Save the tracking number (MTCN) to share with your receiver for pickup. For direct to bank transfers, the money will be deposited into your receiver’s qualifying bank account.

Receive money for cash pickup

Recipients can pick up funds at any agent location, but will need to complete a “To Receive Money” form and include the following information:

  • MTCN (tracking number supplied)
  • Sender’s Name
  • Receiver’s Name
  • Expected Amount
  • MT Originating City and Country
  • MT Destination City and Country
  • Acceptable ID documents (such as passport)
