Business credit cards for fair credit – July 2020

If you've got a fair credit score, you've got a few options when it comes to business credit cards – or you can consider alternative business funding.

Updated

If you’ve got a fair credit score between 600-649, you may find it difficult to get approved for a small business credit card. However, having a credit score on the lower side doesn’t mean you’re out of options, especially if you have a consistent and steady income.

Check out our comparison table below to compare some of the best fair credit business cards on the market side-by-side. If these cards aren’t right for you, you can always consider other types of business funding.

How to choose the right business card for you

To choose the best small business credit card, consider the following:

  • Credit limit. If you have fair credit, you may be approved for a business card with a low credit limit. Providers try to limit their risk, and setting low credit limits is one way to manage this. Anticipate how much your business might spend monthly and consider whether a business card will help you with all of your expenses, or at least some. Once you show the provider that you can responsibly borrow and pay back money, you can always request a credit limit increase.
  • Annual fee. When finances are tight, you might not want to pay an annual fee. Consider how much a card costs before applying. Business cards with annual fees usually come with stronger rewards programs and more benefits, however no annual fee cards can offer helpful benefits too.
  • Interest rates. Fair credit business cards often have standard interest rates of 19.99% and higher, because providers want to make sure they’re getting a return on their risk. With less-than-great credit, you likely won’t qualify for a low rate business card. Check a card’s APR before making a balance transfer or maintaining balances long term.
  • Other credit card types. While unsecured cards offer the best rewards and perks, a prepaid or a secured business card can help you get by until you’re eligible for an unsecured card. There aren’t many secured or prepaid business cards on the market and you’ll typically need to reach out to a provider to ask if they offer them as they usually aren’t listed online. While a secured card requires a deposit that acts as your credit line, you can work on building up your business score with this card type, which means you’ll be able to graduate to an unsecured business card in the near future. Prepaid cards don’t impact your credit score whatsoever.
  • Other options. Don’t settle on a fair credit business card just because you think there are no other options. Research other avenues of funding before applying, such as business loans, lines of credit and start-up funding options.

It’s more difficult to get a business credit card if you have fair to poor credit. However, you may have a couple of unsecured options from providers like American Express. If you’re not sure any of these cards are right for you, check other business financing options before applying.
