Windsor payday loan regulations to be aware of

  • Lenders must be licensed. Lenders must hold an Ontario payday lending licence to be legally allowed to offer payday loans in Windsor. For the payday lenders above, the editorial team visited the government of Ontario’s lender database to check for active licences.
  • Borrow up to $1,500. The maximum payday loan amount in Ontario is $1,500, or up to 50% of your net income.
  • Loans cost $14 for every $100 you borrow. This is the maximum amount a lender is allowed to charge when you take out a payday loan.
  • Maximum loan term of 62 days. While most loans are designed to be repaid by your next payday, the maximum repayment period is up to 62 days.
  • Loan cancellation. After you take out a payday loan, a two-business-day cooling-off period applies. This allows you to cancel the loan during this time without penalty.

Payday loan regulations in Ontario

What are the downsides to payday loans?

There are two main downsides to payday loans:

  • They’re very expensive. Payday lenders can charge you $14 for every $100 you borrow. So if you take out a $700 loan, it will cost you $798 to repay.
  • They have short repayment periods. Most payday loans need to be paid back on your next payday. This makes it very difficult to afford your loan repayment as well as all your other regular expenses.

When you combine these two downsides, they ensure that payday loans come with very high APRs. If you borrow $500 with a 14-day loan term, for example, that works out to a huge APR of 365%.

The other risk you need to watch out for is scams. Predatory lenders target borrowers in urgent need of cash, so make sure any lender you approach is licensed to provide payday loans in Ontario. You can do this by searching for their licence details on the Ontario business registry.

Payday loans vs. cash advances

Payday loans and cash advances both offer fast access to cash and have lenient eligibility criteria, but each borrowing option also has its pros and cons. Payday loans offer larger amounts of up to $1,500, but they’re also very expensive and have short repayment periods. Meanwhile, cash advances are much more affordable and completely interest-free, but they typically have much smaller maximum loan amounts below $750.
Whether a payday loan or a cash advance is a better choice for you depends on your personal financial situation.

If I’m in Windsor, can I cross over to Detroit to get a payday loan?

No. If you are a Canadian citizen, you cannot simply cross the border into Detroit to get a payday loan. To approve you for a loan in Michigan, lenders must verify your identity and income through specific U.S. channels. At a minimum, you must provide:

  • A U.S. government-issued photo ID (such as a Michigan state ID or driver’s licence)
  • A U.S. Social Security Number (SSN)
  • An active U.S. chequing account
