About Newton — company background
Based in Toronto, Newton is a Canadian cryptocurrency trading platform. It was founded in 2018 by Dustin Walper, who created Newton shortly after leaving Akira, a telehealth company he co-founded that is now owned by Telus Health.
Hundreds of thousands of Canadians now use Newton, which has expanded over the years to support trading around 100 cryptos on desktop and mobile apps.

Before you can even get started trading on Newton, you have to go through the rigorous verification process (which usually involves providing proof of identification). This can take time. The reason for this is Newton's commitment to certifications and compliance with regulations and insurers.

Newton follows a number of best practices for safeguarding customers' data and funds. The company has undergone registration with Canadian securities regulators to reinforce public trust and remain compliant with evolving crypto policies.
Regulation. Newton Crypto is regulated by the Canada Securities Administrators (CSA), the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis of Canada (FINTRAC) and securities regulators in every province and territory.
Asset storage & insurance. Newton holds 80% of client assets offline in custodial cold storage with Coinbase and 20% in hot wallets secured by Fireblocks. Crypto assets are covered by a comprehensive insurance policy.
Customer data. Newton has a dedicated security team, and the platform is monitored for threats all day, every day. Daily offsite backups are conducted and stored on Canadian servers. Additionally, the company's platform is internally tested monthly and externally tested annually for vulnerabilities.
