This week Canadians will pay an average of $1.80 per litre for gas, down from $1.90 the previous week. Over the past eight years, the price of gas has averaged $1.41 per litre — or $0.39 per litre less expensive than today.
Yukon has the most expensive gas in Canada as of Jun. 02, 2026, with the highest gas prices in Canada costing $2.07 a litre. It’s followed by Northwest Territories ($1.94) and Newfoundland and Labrador ($1.93) as the next two most expensive provinces to buy gas.
At the other end of the spectrum, gas is at its cheapest in Manitoba, costing just $1.63 as of Jun. 02, 2026. The next cheapest provinces to buy a litre of gas is Alberta ($1.65) followed by Ontario ($1.74).
Gas prices are down on average for Canada as a whole, with gas prices falling over the last week in every provice we have data for.
The national average gas price fell from $1.90 per litre on May. 26, 2026, to $1.80 per litre on Jun. 02, 2026 — a decrease of $0.10 per litre or about -5%.
Newfoundland and Labrador saw gas prices fall $0.14. While Prince Edward Island saw drops of $0.13 and a drop of $0.12 in Manitoba.
Gas prices over the last half-decade or so have seen their ups and downs. In fact, gas prices were at their highest levels ever, hitting $2.14 a litre in the week of Jun. 14, 2022 — a week in which those in Newfoundland and Labrador paid a whopping $2.27 per litre.
Both prices are the highest figures in our dataset.
The current national average of $1.80 a litre is higher than the average cost of gas since 2018: $1.41 a litre.
This means what you’ll pay at the pump in 2026 is about $0.39 a litre more expensive than the national eight-year average.
Canadian gas prices per litre have wavered between a national average of $0.78 and $2.14 since 2018.
Canadians saw the lowest annual average in 2020, when the average cost for a litre of gas was $1.01. Fast-forward 6 years and gas is running an average of $1.60 so far in 2026.
The lowest weekly national average so far this year is $1.27 (Jan. 06, 2026) per litre — which is lower than the eight-year average of $1.41 per litre.
Gas has been super expensive in the last half-decade or so. How expensive? Well 2022 alone saw nine of the 10 most expensive national average prices since 2018, with the other coming on May. 19, 2026.
While 2022 is the year of expensive gas, 2020 played host to all 10 of the cheapest gas prices since 2018.
