Highest gas prices in Canada (May. 12, 2026)

Newfoundland and Labrador has the most expensive gas in Canada as of May. 12, 2026, with the highest gas prices in Canada costing $2.09 a litre. It’s followed by Yukon ($2.08) and British Columbia ($2.06) as the next two most expensive provinces to buy gas.

Cheapest provinces to buy gas right now

At the other end of the spectrum, gas is at its cheapest in Alberta, costing just $1.79 as of May. 12, 2026. The next cheapest provinces to buy a litre of gas is Manitoba ($1.81) followed by Saskatchewan ($1.85).

Are gas prices going up or down?

Gas prices are up on average for Canada as a whole, with gas prices rising over the last week in 11 out of 12 provinces and territories we have data for.

The national average gas price rose from $1.87 per litre on May. 05, 2026, to $1.92 per litre on May. 12, 2026 — an increase of $0.05 per litre or about 3%.

Week-on-week price increases were seen in provinces including Nova Scotia (up $0.19), Yukon (up $0.15) and New Brunswick (up $0.09).

Canada gas prices: 2018 to 2026

Gas prices over the last half-decade or so have seen their ups and downs. In fact, gas prices were at their highest levels ever, hitting $2.14 a litre in the week of Jun. 14, 2022 — a week in which those in Newfoundland and Labrador paid a whopping $2.27 per litre.

Both prices are the highest figures in our dataset.

The current national average of $1.92 a litre is higher than the average cost of gas since 2018: $1.40 a litre.

This means what you’ll pay at the pump in 2026 is about $0.52 a litre more expensive than the national eight-year average.

Canadian gas prices per litre have wavered between a national average of $0.78 and $2.14 since 2018.

Canadians saw the lowest annual average in 2020, when the average cost for a litre of gas was $1.01. Fast-forward 6 years and gas is running an average of $1.55 so far in 2026.

The lowest weekly national average so far this year is $1.27 (Jan. 06, 2026) per litre — which is lower than the eight-year average of $1.40 per litre.
