Are there any exemptions for travelling to India?

South African visitors who are citizens or permanent residents of India are permitted to return at any point. Essential travellers from South Africa are also allowed. The following people are allowed to travel to India:

  • Overseas Citizens of India and Persons of India cardholders
  • Indian nationals or citizens who want to return home after being stuck overseas
  • Foreign nationals who are in possession of a valid visa for India (expired visas can be renewed) – reasons include medical treatment, business, education, conferences, research and employment
  • Foreign nationals who want to visit India via by sea or air (they must enter through valid ports of immigration)
Keep in mind that tourist visas are still not available to South Africans.

Yes, if you're South African and a permanent resident or citizen of India, you are allowed to return to your home.

Do I need a permit to enter India?

All visitors from South Africa must submit a Self Declaration Form prior to arriving in India. In the form, South Africans must include a negative result to a COVID-19 RT-PCR test, taken no longer than 72 hours before departure.

Do I need proof I've had a vaccine to travel?

No, South African travellers do not need proof of vaccination to enter India.

Do I need proof I've had a negative test before departing for India?

Yes, travellers from South Africa need to provide a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test result, which should be attached to your permit. South African visitors who are travelling to India as a result of a death in the family are exempted from this rule – an exception must be applied for through Air Suvidha at least 72 hours before departure.

Visitors from South Africa who have passed through or been to the following countries within the last 14 days will be separated during the flight:

  • United Kingdom
  • Brazil
  • South Africa
All South Africans who have arrived from the United Kingdom, Europe or the Middle East must pay for a confirmatory molecular test when they arrive in India. South Africans from the Middle East or Europe will provide a sample at the airport and will be asked to monitor themselves for 14 days if the test is negative. Positive results will require treatment.

Do I need to quarantine when I arrive in India?

South Africans arriving in India from the United Kingdom, Europe, South Africa or the Middle East must undertake 14 days of hotel quarantine at their own cost. Travellers from South Africa will be tested on the seventh day after their arrival, allowing those with negative results to finish their quarantine at home. Travellers who test positive will be moved to a designated location.
