After a sensational debut at the World Cup, Iceland is likely aiming to use their momentum to score a first win against Nigeria.

The Europeans kicked off the tournament in style and pulled off one of the biggest shocks of round one when they more than held their own against two time champs Argentina. Sergio Aguero scored first in minute 19, but Alfred Finnbogason was quick to equalize only four minutes later. Then, Lionel Messi missed a penalty kick in the second half and the scoreboard was left unchanged until the very end – 1:1.

As a result, Iceland now has a decent shot of qualifying for the next round, especially if they keep banking on their surprisingly strong attacks and maintain a tightly-packed defense. However, the team also failed to register a single attempt on goal in the second half of their clash with Argentina, so they might need to step up their game if they’re eyeing for a win.

Meanwhile, Nigeria is under a lot of psychological pressure following their 2-0 defeat by Croatia in their opening game. They scored an own goal in minute 32 and Luka Modric then converted a penalty in the second half, leaving Nigeria without any World Cup points so far. A loss with Iceland would mean and early exit from the championship, so the stakes are high. The Super Eagles need at least one point to keep their hopes of advancing alive. Their attack lacked against Croatia, so it remains to be seen as to whether they can find an opening through Iceland’s defense. Fun fact: Nigeria have the youngest squad at this year’s World Cup, followed closely by France and England.

The two sides met only once before, in a 1981 friendly won by Iceland 3-0. The Saturday clash will take place on Volgograd Arena.
