As of April 2022, Voxie Tactics is in Open Beta. It's a tactical role-playing game (RPG) built on blockchain technology. The game is free to play, too.

Players can collect 3D pixelated NFT characters called voxies, defeat enemies, collect pets and weapons (soon!), and earn cryptocurrency and NFTs. And if you're just starting out, the game lets you use default in-game characters for exploration and battles, so there's no need to buy Voxies immediately.

Highlights:
  • Free to play
  • Collect voxel NFTs
  • 10,000 genesis Voxies
  • 10 races and 20 classes
  • Turn-based combat
  • PvP and PvE

What is Voxie Tactics?

Launched in March 2021 and developed by AlwaysGeeky Games, Voxie Tactics says that it's the first tactical RPG on the blockchain. The game is built on Ethereum and uses the in-game currency VOXEL. It's playable on PC only, with plans to release on Mac in late 2022 or early 2023.

To play Voxie Tactics, you need to have playable, 3D voxel NFTs called Voxies. There are only 10,000 unique voxie "buddies," each with their own attributes, race, class and rarity.

The game is an Open Beta, so not all features are up and running just yet.

Voxie Tactics has less than 500 members on r/VoxiesNFT, around 60K followers on Twitter and no existing Discord server.

Compared to Axie Infinity's 957K followers on Twitter, 104K redditors and over 700K members on its Discord server, Voxie's following and player community is less impressive. But let's take a look at the gameplay and see how it matches up.

Playing Voxie Tactics

The gameplay of Voxie Tactics is a turn-based RPG genre made popular by the PlayStation classic game and namesake Final Fantasy Tactics.

As we've mentioned, the game is free to play. There are default characters you can use to start your adventure. If you want to buy your own Voxies, they're available on secondary marketplaces.

You need to create an account, using a unique username and password, entering an email address and birthday. You also need the MetaMask wallet and browser extension.

To start playing and collecting, here are the basic steps:

  1. Get a MetaMask wallet. To play and buy Voxies, you need the MetaMask wallet, which is free to get.
  2. Create a party. You can have up to seven Voxies in your party (group of characters that work together in an RPG). Each Voxie is different, so you can choose what characters you want to balance out strengths and weaknesses. You can buy Voxies on secondary marketplaces or use the in-game default characters to start.
  3. Start playing. The game is in Open Beta so anyone can play. Download the game to your PC, which requires Windows 10 and 1080p+ screen resolution.
  4. Choose game mode. There are two game modes: Exploration and battling.

Players earn the native cryptocurrency VOXEL token as they interact and play in the game. VOXEL tokens will be available for purchase in-game or on several exchanges, and users can buy the NFTs required to play on secondary marketplaces, like the official collection on the NFT marketplace OpenSea.

What is the Voxie Tactics token?

VOXEL is the native in-game currency. It's used as the in-game marketplace token for purchasing equipment, items and resources. The fully-diluted allocation of VOXEL tokens is 300,000,000, with 2% of the tokens released on a weekly basis, which ended February 2022. There is a circulating supply of 64,021,081 VOXEL currently.

At the time of writing, VOXEL is valued at $1.32 according to CoinMarketCap.

There are multiple pairs of VOXEL tokens, including VOXEL/USDT, VOXEL/BUSD, VOXEL/BTC and VOXEL/ETH. The token can be swapped on multiple exchanges. For more help getting VOXEL, read our VOXEL buy guide.

How does play-to-earn work with Voxie Tactics?

There are two main ways to earn in this game:

  • Play-to-earn. Players can earn crypto and NFT rewards from playing the game.
  • Sell digital assets. Voxie Tactics NFTs can be sold on secondary marketplaces such as OpenSea.

What are the Voxie Tactics NFTs?

Each voxie is a fully animated 3D NFT created from voxels with playful animations and emotes. A voxie has 20 attributes that make them unique with varying rarity. Each voxie can be one of 10 races and one of 20 classes, which carry distinct characteristics and abilities for in-game use.

There are also collectible NFT pets, with rewards for collecting them all. They're also useful in completing NPC quests, and help in battle with their special abilities. The NFT pets come in four categories: Land, Flying, Water and Special.

How to get and sell the NFTs

All 10,000 unique Voxie buddies were bought out (released in March 2021), so players must buy them on secondary marketplaces.

To access the Voxie Tactic's marketplace, you'll need a crypto wallet and a Web3 browser so you can buy, sell and collect the NFT collectibles.

About the developers

AlwaysGeeky Games has some experience behind them — which isn't what we see often with blockchain games. Additionally, the main site has a dedicated section noting their experience with direct links to the team member's social profiles.

The founder and CEO is Steven Ball, who has experience with AAA titles as an online architect, designer and team manager. He's contributed to massive AAA franchises like Assassin's Creed, Far Cry and the Harry Potter games. Ball worked with Ubisoft for nearly 10 years and EA for five years.

It's refreshing to see a team and CEO with legitimate development experience; especially with massive studios like EA and Ubisoft. Many blockchain game developers don't bother to note their experience or the developers are faceless, so this extra effort is a major win in our book.

Voxie Tactics roadmap

Voxie Tactics has been released in four phases. We're in phase three right now, which includes:

  • Game launch
  • Marketplace launch

Phase four is slated to include:

  • Crafting and forging
  • Sandbox integration for avatars and VoxiTavern
  • More Voxies weapons, quests, items and features

Bottom line

Voxie Tactics is just getting started. The developers are taking their time with this launch, which isn't a bad thing, but they may have missed the blockchain game craze that happened in the summer of '21.

However, it has a variety of features, is being developed by an experienced team and it's free to play. Many blockchain games require an investment — usually buying pricey NFTs to start playing — but Voxie Tactics seems to be taking a more affordable approach to draw in players new to the blockchain gaming space.
