What to expect from Veterans Day sales

Veterans Day deals usually come around for a short period of time in late October and early November, giving shoppers a chance to get a head start on holiday shopping. While many of the deals are geared towards active military members, veterans and their families, there’s still plenty of savings to go around.

Some of the best deals and discounts this time of year are usually in these four categories:

Mattresses

Online mattress brands are known to slash prices for holidays like Veterans Day, so be on the lookout for dollar amounts off your new mattress, free pillows and sheets and other discounts.

Lots of mattress brands also offer a military discount year-round, including:

  • Loom & Leaf: $100 military discount
  • Saatva: $100 military discount
  • Zenhaven: $100 military discount
  • Allswell: No official discount — but if you ask, customer service will likely offer military members a coupon for 10% off

Home goods

Now’s a great time of year to start prepping your home for the holidays, before the rush of Thanksgiving and Black Friday starts. Pick up essentials or decorate your home with goods from Bed, Bath & Beyond, which is offering a one-time 25% off discount on purchases. Be sure to check out Macy's as well, where the retailer is slashing 30% off select sales items.

Perhaps one of the most generous deals comes courtesy of Sears. You’ll find 40% off appliances and 10% off purchases of select appliances totaling $599 or more.

Clothing

Clothing and accessories often go on sale for Veterans Day. Between November 1 and 11, Target is offering all U.S. active-duty military personnel, veterans and their families a 10% discount (some exclusions do apply).

Nordstrom Rack has also been known for holding sales, in the past offering 25% off clearance. No word yet from American Eagle on deals this year, but we’ve seen the retailer offer active duty members 10-15% off purchases so definitely keep checking back!

Food

Restaurants are known to give discounts and freebies to veterans on Veterans day. Just a few of the chains that usually offer discounts and free meals for Veterans Day include:

  • Olive Garden
  • Applebee’s
  • Houlihan’s
  • Chili’s
  • Ben’s Soft Pretzels
  • Max & Erma’s
  • LongHorn Steakhouse
  • Red Lobster
  • Starbucks
  • Bubba Gump Shrimp

If you’re looking to send a gift basket to a veteran, many online companies like 1-800-Flowers and FTD.com offer special red-white-and-blue themed gift baskets, snacks and floral arrangements.

Bottom line

While Veterans Day sales aren’t nearly as big as Black Friday deals, you can usually scoop up a bargain on smaller buys before the craziness of the holiday season officially kicks off.
