How can I get the best exchange rate between the US dollar and the Surinamese dollar?
The Surinamese dollar is the only legal tender in the country, meaning it’s necessary for anyone traveling to Suriname to exchange their money into local currency. However, many locals prefer to receive US dollars over local currency due to the more stable value of the American currency. It’s not uncommon to see prices quoted in USD on expensive items like cars or household appliances.
Cash is the way to go while traveling in Suriname. While traveler’s checks can be exchanged at some banks, debit and credit cards are generally not accepted outside of major hotels. It’s also important to note that MasterCard is usually the only card accepted at ATMs in Suriname — Visa only works at a few ATMs.
Many travelers and locals choose to exchange money on the street to get a better exchange rate than the official rates that banks offer. Banks and online money transfer services that support the Surinamese dollar will only offer it at the official exchange rate.

What affects exchange rates between the US dollar and the Surinamese dollar?
As the smallest country by land mass in South America with a population of only about half a million, Suriname’s currency is also very small by international standards. The official exchange rate between USD and SRD depends on how well the Surinamese economy performs.
Exports of commodities like oil and gold, as well as agricultural products like rice and bananas are key factors in the economy. Although the value of the Surinamese dollar compared to the US dollar is fixed at official rates controlled by the Central Bank of Suriname, any drop in prices of these goods is likely to create pressure on the exchange rate between the two currencies.
In Suriname’s, there’s also a black market for currency exchange on the streets. If the central bank doesn’t regularly adjust its official exchange rate according to the economy, the difference between the official rate and the black market rate will grow wider, rendering the official rate irrelevant for all practical purposes.

How does the Surinamese dollar trade against the US dollar historically?
Introduced in 2004, the Surinamese dollar is a very new currency and the exchange rate history with the US dollar is limited. The currency was established to combat inflation in the old Suriname guilder, replacing it at a rate of 1,000 to 1.
Around 2010, a Surinamese dollar was worth roughly a third of a US dollar. However, inflation and government-initiated devaluations has eroded away a large part of the value of the Surinamese dollar, leaving it worth only about 0.13 USD as of 2018.
Apart from the controlled devaluations against the US dollar that has occurred several times over the past decade, the exchange rate between the US dollar and the Surinamese dollar is indeed very stable.
