WIR Euro
What is the WIR euro?
The WIR euro is used by members of the WIR Bank and is designed to facilitate transactions between banks. This maintains the stability of the Swiss banking economy and lets member businesses easily trade with each other. Businesses benefit from using CHW because loans come with either little or no interest.
The WIR euro is not in circulation, so you can’t exchange your money for this currency.
The CHF to CHW exchange rate is fixed at 1:1, and there’s no official way to convert CHW into CHF. Although you can’t convert CHW to CHF, dual-currency transactions are very common.
How does the WIR Bank work?
The WIR Bank issues credit, an alternative currency, to participating bank members that can then be traded or spent among themselves. CHW is backed by tangible assets of value.
CHW is generally used by smaller businesses and proves to be an effective model of the barter system. The free flow of currency between businesses and members directly influences and helps regulate the Swiss economy. It also encourages spending between members which in turn results in higher profits for participating businesses.
