Expert review

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Gold American Express® Card can be a great choice if you’re looking for a generous welcome offer and solid reward earnings. This card offers 5x points on prepaid hotels and car rentals, 3x points at restaurants, 2x points at airlines and gas stations, 1x points everywhere else, a welcome offer worth 30,000 points after you spend $2,000 in your first 4 months of membership, and requires an annual fee of $85.

You’ll also benefit from an airline allowance credit every time you redeem an award flight, a TSA PreCheck or Global entry fee credit and you won’t pay foreign transaction fees when traveling abroad.

The card does carry an annual fee, though it doesn’t quite offer the extra perks and features you’d expect from the asking price. This card also lacks an intro APR period, so there may be better options out there if those two considerations are a big part of your final decision.

Card benefits

  • Welcome offer.
Spend $2,000 on purchases in your first 4 months of card membership and earn 30,000 FlexPoints. According to U.S. Bank as of January 2019, that’s up to $450 worth of airfare, hotel stays and car rentals, or less if you redeem for cash back, gift cards or merchandise.
  • FlexPoints.
Earn 5x points at prepaid hotels and car rentals, 3x points at restaurants, 2x points at airlines and gas stations and 1x points on everything else you buy.
  • TSA PreCheck or Global Entry fee credit.
Get automatic reimbursement as a statement credit for the application fee for the program you apply for first.
  • Airline allowance.
Get up to $25 reimbursement for baggage fees, in-flight food and beverages for each award ticket you redeem.
  • Complimentary Boingo Wi-Fi.
Enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi at more than 1 million hotspots worldwide.

What to watch out for

  • Annual fee.
You’ll pay a yearly fee of $85 to own the card. It takes about 5,667 points, or about $1,890 in restaurant spending, to cover the fee.
  • No intro APR period.
The card comes with a purchase and balance transfer APR of 14.49% to 24.49% variable right off the bat. If you’re looking to save money by postponing interest for a period, look for a 0% intro APR credit card.
