Steps to activate your U.S. Bank cash back
To earn 5% cash back, you must activate two eligible categories each quarter. To earn 2% cash back, you must activate one eligible category each quarter.
- Activation starts 45 days before the start of each quarter, though you can still activate five days before the end of the quarter.
- To activate, call the number on the back of your card or log in at usbank.com/cashplus.
- Each category with accelerated cash back lasts for three months.
What counts as a 5% cashback category purchase?
You’ll earn 5% cash back on everything you buy within your selected categories if you enrolled that quarter. However, you’re limited to $2,000 in combined purchases per quarter. Once you reach the cap, you’ll earn 1% cash back on these categories.
Quarterly cash back for the 2% category is unlimited if you enrolled, while everything else you buy earns 1% back.

Note: In 2020, Chase Freedom Flex℠ added a new category that doesn’t rotate — 5% cash back on Lyft rides until March 31, 2022.
Which card is better?
It all comes down to your preference. If you spend more in the categories offered by Chase Freedom Flex℠, then that should be your choice. But if you prefer to choose your categories and to know beforehand what you’ll get high rewards on, the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card could be the better choice.
