However, there’s a new type of savings account on the block where you get paid the total amount of interest within the first month of opening. I run through how this works in practice, who it suits and different ways you could put your upfront interest to use.

What is upfront interest?

An upfront interest account is a type of savings account that pays the interest into your nominated bank account in the first month, rather than you having to wait until the end of your fixed term to receive it.

There’s only one upfront interest account currently available on the market and it’s the Lloyds Upfront Interest 1 Year Online Fixed Bond. With this account, your savings are locked away for 12 months and the interest on the total sum is paid to you upfront. You have 10 days from opening to deposit your funds, and Lloyds pays the full interest into your nominated bank account within the following 10 days. You are then free to use the interest however you choose.

How does upfront interest work?

Let’s say someone had £50,000 they wanted to put safely into a savings account and had already maxed out their ISA allowance for that year. If they chose to deposit this sum into the Lloyds Upfront Interest account, rather than a standard one year fixed-rate bond, they would receive £2,000 upfront which they could then invest, save in a different account, or spend on a much-needed holiday!

Deposit amount

Interest rate

Upfront interest (within 20 days)

£10,000

4.00% AER

£400

£20,000

4.00% AER

£800

£40,000

4.00% AER

£1,600

£50,000

4.00% AER

£2,000

£100,000

4.00% AER

£4,000

Who does upfront interest suit?

While all eligible adults can benefit from an early interest payment, there are some savers that this type of account works particularly well for:

Your fixed-rate bond is maturing. Savers in this position can benefit from a unique ‘double whammy’ where they are paid the interest from the maturing bond, plus the new upfront interest.

You’ve maxed out your cash ISA allowance. Currently in the UK, savers can deposit £20,000 each tax year into a cash ISA. If you get a lump sum, you may need a fixed-rate bond anyway – and this account has the added benefit of upfront interest.

You want to fund a big spend in 12 months time. For savers who can lock away their money for 12 months, but still want some liquid cash for short-term use.

You’re a cautious saver who wants interest as income. The account may also suit savers who prefer a high street name and the certainty of knowing their savings are fixed at a certain rate, but still want the interest as income immediately.

How could I put my upfront interest to use?

Invest it

A great way to benefit from the compounding effect of early interest is to invest it. For example, if I deposited £25,000 into the Lloyds Upfront Interest account (paying 4% AER), I would get £1,000 in interest in the first month that I am free to invest.

Having a year’s advantage can make a significant difference over time. Let’s say I had invested in a fund tracking the S&P 500 between September 2016 and September 2026. After 10 years, I would have around £3,990, whereas someone who only invested their £1,000 a year later – once it matured – would have £3,486. That’s a difference of over £500 (see methodology below*).

If I deposited £50,000 in the same upfront interest account, I would get £2,000 in interest. Taking the same S&P 500 example, someone who invested that straight away would have approximately £7,981 after 10 years while someone who started a year later would have an estimated £6,973. That’s a difference of over £1,000!

Antonia would invest the interest to save for her dream home

"When it comes to building my funds for the future, it’s helpful for growth to get the interest a year early rather than waiting for 12 months to access that payment. Additional liquid cash

Upfront interest means less of your money has to be locked away. It can be reassuring to lock in a savings rate for 12 months – given that variable rates can quickly change – but with a typical fixed-term account, this means you’re giving up access to your pot entirely. However, with upfront interest, you get a portion of your cash back to use as you please.

2. Compounding

With a standard 12-month fixed bond, you won’t get your interest until the following year. However, if you receive your interest payment in the first month, you can save it or invest it from this point, meaning it has the potential to generate additional returns for you. Over time, this can add up.

3. The ‘double whammy’

For existing fixed-rate bond customers, there’s a unique benefit in getting double interest in one month. You will receive the interest from your maturing bond, as well as another payment if you open an upfront account. That should leave you with a nice chunk of money that you can put towards a holiday or invest for future returns.

For example, let’s say someone had £40,000 in a 12-month fixed bond paying 4% AER that has just matured. You’d receive £1,600 in interest that month. If you then moved the £40,000 into the Lloyds Upfront Interest account at 4% AER, you’d get another £1,600 within 20 days of opening it. That’s £3,200 in interest in around a month, while your £40,000 stays fixed for another year.

Payment

Details

Amount received

Matured bond interest

4% AER on £40,000 (paid upon maturity)

£1,600

Upfront bond interest

4% AER on £40,000 (paid in advance within 20 days)

£1,600

Total interest in month 1

Capital stays fixed for another year (£40,000)

£3,200

However, keep in mind that both interest payments could land in the same tax year, which may take you over your Personal Savings Allowance.

Who might not be suited to an upfront interest account?

You want easy access to your money. Although you get early access to the interest, you need to lock your savings away with this type of account, so it won’t suit someone who wants access to their pot at all times.

You want tax-free interest and have some of your ISA allowance remaining. ISAs might be a better fit if you’re looking to place your savings inside a tax wrapper.

You wouldn’t do anything with the interest. The main advantage of upfront interest is putting the money to use early. If it would just sit in your current account, you may be better off with a fixed bond that pays a higher rate at maturity.

What are the tax implications of upfront interest?

As with other fixed-term savings bonds, the interest you earn counts towards your Personal Savings Allowance in the tax year it is paid to you. This means you may need to pay tax on any earnings above the limit. The Personal Savings Allowance is £1,000 for basic-rate taxpayers, £500 for higher-rate taxpayers and £0 for additional-rate taxpayers.

If you’re considering opening an upfront interest account, it’s all about timing. You should consider which tax year you’d like the interest paid into based on your other earnings from savings.

Bottom line

The upfront interest model is currently a unique offering – you can only open this account with Lloyds at the time of writing (October 2026). There are numerous situations where this type of savings account works well, particularly for existing bond users who could get a ‘double whammy’ of interest, people with a chunky sum of money who have used up the ISA allowance, and customers who would benefit from an upfront cash boost to fund a lifestyle purchase rather than waiting a year for their interest.

Frequently asked questions

Which banks offer upfront interest in the UK?

Currently, Lloyds is the only bank offering an upfront interest savings account in the UK. Santander offered a similar product in the past but it no longer exists.

What's the difference between upfront interest and monthly interest?

With an upfront interest account, the entire sum of interest is paid into your nominated account at the start of the term. The most similar product is a savings account that pays interest monthly into your nominated account, but with these accounts you cannot access all of the interest at the start.

Can I withdraw my money from an upfront interest account?

As it stands, it's not possible to withdraw your savings from an upfront interest account, although you will have access to the interest payment. Therefore, you need to be comfortable with locking your savings away.

Can I get upfront interest on a cash ISA?

Not currently.
