We look at the latest statistics on how much businesses have in cash reserves &#8211; and whether they are saving any.<\/p><article class=\"luna-card luna-card--shadow\"><div class=\"luna-card__block\"><h3 class=\"luna-sectionTitle\">UK savings statistics: Highlights<\/h3><ul><li>The average small SME holds around \u00a3225,000 in cash savings.<\/li><li>The average mid-sized SME holds around \u00a3620,000 in cash savings.<\/li><li>72% of SMEs leave their cash reserves idle.<\/li><li>64% of SMEs hold surplus cash in current accounts, making it the most popular lcoation.<\/li><li>Three quarters of SMEs (73%) save mostly or entirely with high street banks.<\/li><li>Top reasons for not moving cash include.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/article><h3>How much does the average small business have in savings?<\/h3><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flagstoneim.com\/business\/learn\/business-insights\/how-businesses-use-laddering-to-earn-more\" target=\"_blank\">Research by Flagstone<\/a> shows that the average mid-sized SME (small and medium-sized enterprise) holds around \u00a3620,000 in cash reserves. Meanwhile, the average small SME has around \u00a3225,000 in cash reserves. <\/p><p>This is a much higher figure than the average personal savings &#8211; which a Finder survey reveals is \u00a319,214 &#8211; so there is potential for earning interest on this money. <\/p><h3>What do small businesses do with their cash reserves?<\/h3><p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flagstoneim.com\/business\/learn\/business-insights\/the-cash-performance-gap-report\" target=\"_blank\">Flagstone&#8217;s cash performance gap report<\/a>, only 28% of SMEs are actively managing their cash reserves, which means that 72% are just leaving the cash sitting rather than making sure it&#8217;s earning the best savings rates.<\/p><p>In fact, 64% of businesses hold their surplus cash in a current account, which rarely offer decent (or any) returns. This is compared to the 39% of businesses that hold their cash in an instant access savings account, and the third (32%) of businesses that hold their cash in a fixed-term savings account. <\/p><h4>Where do businesses hold their savings?<\/h4><ul class='nav nav-tabs pb-tabs'><li class=\"active\"><a href=\"#tab8431\" data-toggle=\"tab\">Chart<\/a><\/li><li class=\"\"><a href=\"#tab6066\" savings, but only a quarter (24%) have actually acted.<\/p><p>The top reason for this is that businesses want their cash to be liquid and easy to access, rather than locked away, with 2 in 5 (40%) giving this as a factor. <\/p><p>Other commons factors include the lack of time (27%) and a sense that it will be complex or difficult (25%).<\/p><ul class='nav nav-tabs pb-tabs'><li
