Make sure you keep an eye on your savings rate and get ready to switch to a better paying account if the rate drops. There are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/current-accounts\/high-interest-current-account\">current accounts that pay interest<\/a>.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Use a savings pot to organise your cash<\/h3><p>Many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/current-accounts\/banking-apps-with-savings-pots\">online banking providers now offer savings pots<\/a> that allow you to separate your cash for different purposes. You can often give each savings pot a name and some also pay interest on your cash, helping you to reach your savings goals faster. Popular apps include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/current-accounts\/revolut-review\">Revolut<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/current-accounts\/starling-bank-review\">Starling<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/current-accounts\/chase-digital-bank-review\">Chase<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/current-accounts\/monzo-review\">Monzo<\/a>.<\/p><p>Another option, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/savings-accounts\/zopa-savings-accounts\">Zopa<\/a>, for example, offers Boosted pots that pay a higher interest rate but require you to give notice before accessing your money, as well as Access pots that pay a lower interest rate but give you instant access to your cash.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Automate your savings<\/h3><p>It\u2019s easy to set up a regular automatic transfer from your bank account to your savings account so that you save without even thinking about it. This can prevent you from spending the money in your account that you should be saving.<\/p><p>What\u2019s more, some banking apps offer round-up features that round up your spending to the nearest \u00a31 and automatically transfer the difference to your selected savings pot. Popular apps include <a href=\"finder.com\/uk\/digital-banking\/plum-savings-review\">Plum<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/share-trading\/share-trading-reviews\/moneybox\">Moneybox<\/a>.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Take on a savings challenge<\/h3><p>There are plenty of different savings challenges to try. For example, the 1p savings challenge requires you to save 1p on day 1, 2p on day 2, 3p on day 3 and so on. After 365 days, you\u2019ll have saved more than \u00a3650.<\/p><p>You could also try the \u00a31 challenge that works in the same way, but starts with \u00a31. Or the 52-week saving challenge where you save weekly rather than daily, and the amount you save depends on what week it is. In week 1, you save \u00a31, week 2 you save \u00a32, and so on until you get to week 52. By the end of the year, you\u2019ll have saved \u00a31,378.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Make the most of bonuses and incentives<\/h3><p>Always take advantage of any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/free-money\/bank-sign-up-bonuses\">bonuses or discounts<\/a> on offer from banks and banking apps, particularly when you first sign up. <\/p><p>You might be given straightforward cashback, or you might be able to make use of a \u2018refer a friend\u2019 scheme that could help you earn even more cash.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Switch banks to earn money<\/h3><p>Switching bank accounts can enable you to take advantage of better features or enjoy improved customer service. But many banks also offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/current-accounts\/best-bank-switch-deals\">switching bonuses<\/a> where you can earn \u00a3100 or more just for moving your bank account to a new provider. <\/p><p>You will usually need to use the Current Account Switch Service to make the move and some banks might have separate eligibility criteria that must be met to get your reward.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Cancel unused subscriptions<\/h3><p>Go through your bank statements every few months to check whether there are any subscriptions you\u2019re paying for that you simply don\u2019t need. Are you paying for a subscription to a magazine you never read or did you sign up for a free trial and forget to cancel it once that period was over? If you find any, get them cancelled immediately. Popular banking apps like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/current-accounts\/starling-bank-review\">Starling<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/current-accounts\/revolut-review\">Revolut<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/current-accounts\/monzo-review\">Monzo<\/a> will help you track your spending and easily see an overview for subscriptions.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Stop buying on impulse<\/h3><p>Buying online is easy which means you can quickly end up spending money on items you don\u2019t need. <\/p><p>If you\u2019ve added items to your online shopping basket, leave them there for at least 24 hours while you mull over whether the purchase is actually necessary. Chances are, you\u2019ll wake up the next day and decide you don\u2019t need them after all.<\/p><p>It\u2019s also sensible to unsubscribe from retailers\u2019 emails and stop following them on social media to prevent you from being tempted to buy more.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Shop around at renewal<\/h3><p>Never simply accept your home or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/car-insurance\">car insurance<\/a> renewal quote. Although insurers are no longer allowed to charge existing customers more at renewal than they charge new customers, you could still save money by shopping around and comparing quotes from a range of different providers.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Save on your energy bills<\/h3><p>There are lots of easy ways to reduce your energy bills, such as turning off lights when you leave the room, switching to LED bulbs, switching off appliances left on standby mode, and turning down the thermostat by a degree. <\/p><p>One of the cheapest ways to cut your energy bills as winter approaches is to block the draughts coming through windows and doors and, if you have one, your open chimney. You need some ventilation to stop damp, but if air\u2019s coming in through rattling windows, or whistling under the front door, it\u2019s time to roll out the self-adhesive foam tape (or, for sash windows, brush strips). Tape costs as little as \u00a310. Brushes are a bit more. A draught excluder fitted in or around a chimney costs around \u00a320. You have to remove it if you use the fire.<br>    <strong>What else can you do?<\/strong><br>    There are lots of ways to insulate your home and stop it from losing heat, such as adding radiator reflector panels behind radiators that are on an external wall, or putting a jacket around the hot water tank. The Energy Saving Trust site has lots of tips on this.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Buy second-hand<\/h3><p>These days it\u2019s easier than ever to buy clothes second-hand, thanks to the rise of websites and apps such as Vinted and Depop. But you can also use these sites to buy items such as children\u2019s games and accessories, making them ideal when hunting for gifts. Other second-hand options include eBay and Facebook Marketplace.<\/p><p>Before buying, be sure to check out the seller\u2019s reviews, read the description carefully and don\u2019t forget to factor in postage costs.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Try a no-spend weekend<\/h3><p>Nominate a weekend where you won\u2019t spend anything at all. You might need to get creative to achieve this goal, but you could cook using leftovers in the fridge, go for long walks, create a movie night or visit free museums.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Switch your supermarket<\/h3><p>If you always shop at the same supermarket, it might be time to switch things up. <\/p><p>Discounters such as Aldi and Lidl often have lower prices, but you\u2019ll need to have one local to you to make the savings worth it. If you don\u2019t, it\u2019s worth keeping an eye on research that compares prices at the major supermarkets so you can see which ones work out to be cheapest.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Shop around for petrol<\/h3><p>Sites like petrolprices.com help you find the cheapest petrol stations in your area for free. Simply enter your postcode and watch the results come up. You can filter by brand or fuel type or, if you\u2019re in a rush, filter by distance instead of price. You could save up to \u00a3240 a year.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Set up a spending limit on your card<\/h3><p>Some banks, such as NatWest and Barclays, enable you to set spending limits on your debit or credit card to discourage you from spending too much.<\/p><p>With NatWest, for instance, you can set a daily or monthly spending budget on your credit card through the app. If you go over this limit, you\u2019ll be notified immediately.<\/p><p>Barclays, meanwhile, lets you set a limit on how much you can spend in a single transaction on your debit card. Again, you can set this up in your app.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Haggle on your bills<\/h3><p>If your mobile phone or broadband contract has come to an end, don\u2019t be afraid to try haggling with your current provider to see if you can get a better deal. This can be more effective if you\u2019ve found a cheaper deal elsewhere, so it\u2019s worth doing some research before you pick up the phone so you can hit your existing provider with some numbers.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Stop wasting food<\/h3><p>According to Love Food Hate Waste, by reducing food waste at home, 8 meals a week could be saved.<\/p><p>Storing your food correctly can help prevent food from going off too fast, while it also pays to plan your meals each week so that you know exactly how much food you will need and can avoid overspending. Using any leftovers for the following day\u2019s lunch saves you money too.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Pay off expensive debts<\/h3><p>If you\u2019ve got expensive debts to pay off, it can be more cost-effective to use any savings you have to clear those debts. That\u2019s because the interest you\u2019re earning on your savings is often lower than the interest you\u2019re paying on your debts. <\/p><p>If you have multiple debts to repay, you can save money by focusing on your most expensive debt first. To do this, pay off as much as possible on that debt, while keeping up with the minimum monthly repayments on your other debts. Once that debt is cleared, focus on the next most expensive debt and so on.<\/p><\/li><li><h3> Get true bargains in the sales<\/h3><p>Looks like a sale, sounds like a sale\u2026 but it\u2019s not really a sale unless the prices are cheaper than usual. There are sale bargains to be had, but not everything in a sale is a bargain. <\/p><p>Use price-tracking sites such as PriceRunner, PriceSpy or Camelcamelcamel (for Amazon prices) to look at the price history of a product you want to buy. When we checked the Tower Vortx T17039 air fryer, it was discounted to \u00a373.99 (typically \u00a390\u2013\u00a3100) on Amazon during \u201cBlack Week\u201d in November 2021. But a quick look on PriceRunner shows it dropped to \u00a366.99 the previous month.<\/p><p><b>Save:<\/b> \u00a36 on this air fryer, but you could save a lot more if you always check the price history before buying, and track prices so you buy when an item is really cheapest. <\/p><p><strong>What else can you do?<\/strong><br>Get discounts on your discounts by buying through a cashback site. You can join for free. Find out about these in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/shopping\/cashback\">our guide to cashback sites.<\/a>  <\/p><\/li><li><h3>Save on your Christmas spending<\/h3><p>Before you start your Christmas shopping, sign up to a cashback site like Quidco or TopCashback \u2013 use the free version.<\/p><p>Lots of major stores such as Currys and Argos partner with these sites. When you visit a partner retailer\u2019s site via a link on a cashback site, and then make a purchase, the cashback site tracks this and puts the cashback in your account.<\/p><p>Sometimes you\u2019ll see exclusive deals with stores \u2013 when we checked in October, TopCashback offered 20% cashback on Samsung earbuds at Currys, for example.<\/p><\/li><\/ol><article class=\"luna-card luna-card--alt\"><div class=\"luna-card__block\"><div class=\"u-grid\"><div class=\"u-grid__col u-1\/1 no-padding-bottom\"><h4 class=\"has-padding-bottom-x-small\">How Finder\u2019s editor-in-chief saves on Christmas costs<\/h4><\/div><div class=\"u-grid__col u-1\/6@s\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"luna-avatar luna-avatar--large\" src=\"https:\/\/secure.gravatar.com\/avatar\/f5cb642fc9e4c09b1bdf1075b91e8f8a?s=96&amp;d=mm&amp;r=g\" alt=\"Liz Edwards\" loading=\"lazy\"><div class=\"has-padding-top-small text-x-small\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/author\/lizedwards\">Liz Edwards<\/a> editor-in-chief (UK)<\/em><\/div><\/div><div class=\"u-grid__col u-10\/12@s no-padding-bottom\">I\u2019m a big fan of buying refurbished models from a reputable place that gives you a guarantee. And Amazon sells \u201copen box\u201d returned products at a discount through Amazon Warehouse.<br><br>I always save on food and drink by opting for good quality supermarket products. In November, lots of publications reveal the results of Christmas food and drink taste tests that pit big names against the supermarket versions. Lidl\u2019s \u00a312.49 Champagne Veuve Delattre Brut, and Co-op\u2019s \u00a319 Les Pionniers have held their own in expert taste tests, beating premium brands that were double the price at \u00a338.<br><br>If you have kids who are into crafts, get them making gift bags. Hobbycraft sells a 5-pack of gift bags for \u00a33, and glitter and glue are \u00a31 each, so you\u2019ll get 5 bags for \u00a35. Small gift bags at John Lewis are \u00a32 each, or \u00a310 for 5, so you\u2019ll save \u00a35, plus your kids will be less bored in the holidays.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/article><h3>Bottom line<\/h3><p>Saving money doesn\u2019t have to be difficult.
