Copy trading is a type of technology that lets ordinary investors copy the trades of other investors. This can be a game changer for those just starting out with investing and trading because it means you can mimic the moves of experts (or more experienced traders) if you\u2019re not comfortable placing your own trades.<\/p><p>In theory, you automatically replicate the actions of other investors, imitating their every move without lifting a finger. You follow them, they make trades, you automatically copy those trades; and hopefully, if they\u2019re successful, so are you. However, the opposite is also true \u2013 their failures become your failures too. There\u2019s no such thing as a free lunch, even if you happen to have the same lunchbox as your neighbour.<\/p><h3>How does copy trading work?<\/h3><p>In most cases, copy trading works by using a separate piece of software alongside your existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/share-trading\">trading platform or brokerage<\/a>. However, some trading platforms now have integrated software that allows you to browse and copy other trades. The basic premise is that by copying the trades of someone with more experience, you can improve your chances of being successful, but that\u2019s not always the case.<\/p><p>Essentially, when you decide to copy someone, you can opt to automatically copy what they do (whether that\u2019s buying or selling). Usually, you don\u2019t have to copy the same monetary amount, just the type of trade. For example, if they\u2019re placing a buy trade with \u00a310,000 you can copy it with a much smaller sum of say, \u00a3100 for example. Always check this though so that you don\u2019t end up investing more than you\u2019re comfortable with.<\/p><p>Certain platforms will also let you choose whether to copy all trades or just a portion, but that can complicate things as trading often relies on the assumption that some moves won\u2019t work out. So if you cherry pick your trade to copy, you could end up just copying all the losing trades from that investor.<\/p><h3>Best copy trading platforms in the UK<\/h3><p>Finding the best copy trading platform to use is going to depend largely on your preferred investing strategy and which interface you like using for copying trades.<\/p><p>There are several brokerages operating in the UK to choose from that offer copy trading. Each can differ in terms of complexity and other features, here are some popular examples of copy trading platforms:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Etoro.<\/strong> This is probably the most accessible copy trading platform for most UK investors because the interface is straightforward to use, the platform is relatively beginner-friendly, and you can use its patented CopyTrader feature from $200. You can read more in our in-depth etoro review or watch our eToro video review.<\/li><li><strong>Pepperstone.<\/strong> You need to have an MT4 or MT5 Pepperstone account and then you can download a separate app, link it to your account and pick your signal provider (trader) to copy their moves.<\/li><li><strong>AvaTrade.<\/strong> With this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/forex-trading\">forex<\/a> and c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/cfd-trading\">ontracts for difference (CFD)<\/a> brokerage, you can attempt to copy a trader\u2019s success (or share their losses) by using the AvaSocial app to copy trades and create groups to share ideas and interact with other traders. You can also integrate the ZuluTrade software (detailed next).<\/li><li><strong>ZuluTrade.<\/strong> The platform allows you to follow and copy trades from top global traders, dubbing itself a \u201csocial intelligence platform\u201d where you can mirror the trading positions of its \u201cleaders\u201d. You can integrate ZuluTrade\u2019s software into a number of other trading platforms too, like AvaTrade for example.<\/li><li><strong>Axi.<\/strong> The Axi copy trading app focuses purely on \u2013 you guessed it \u2013 copy trading. Axi is an app that allows copiers to mimic the trades of other investors (sometimes called providers, signal providers or master traders). You will need to have an existing MT4 trading account to link up with the Axi app before you can start copying trades.<\/li><\/ul><h3>Alternative ways to make money from copy trading<\/h3><p>With most of the platforms that allow copy trading, you can also opt to become a copied trader. So, you can attempt to build up a following and get other investors to copy your trades.<\/p><p>You\u2019re probably not going to want to do this until you\u2019ve got plenty of experience under your belt and a proven track record of successful trades (otherwise no one is going to want to copy you, obviously). But, if you do reach this stage, you can get paid commissions and bonuses based on your trading performance (and sometimes the size of your following).<\/p><h3>How to start copy trading<\/h3><p>Here\u2019s a straightforward step-by-step guide if you\u2019re considering copying the trades of other investors:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Choose a platform.<\/strong> You\u2019ll need to decide whether you want a trading platform like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/share-trading\/etoro-review\">eToro<\/a> where everything is integrated, or if you want to use a standalone trading brokerage and integrate a piece of copy trading software yourself.<\/li><li><strong>Set up your account.<\/strong> Once you\u2019ve found your preferred platform, you\u2019ll have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/share-trading\/open-a-share-trading-account\">open a trading account<\/a> and pass some verification checks.<\/li><li><strong>Deposit funds.<\/strong> After you\u2019ve been verified and your account is up and running, you\u2019ll need to deposit funds into your account to use for copying trades.<\/li><li><strong>Research traders to copy.<\/strong> It\u2019s worth taking some time to find the trader (or traders) you want to copy and do plenty of research to see if their investing style is something that you\u2019re comfortable with. Don\u2019t just pick a trader with the highest historical returns, because this might not suit your investment risk profile or goals.<\/li><li><strong>Start copying trades.<\/strong> Each platform is different but you should be able to arrange to automatically copy the trades of your chosen investor (signal provider). With some brokerages, you can also carry out manual or semi-automatic position copies.<\/li><li><strong>Monitor and adjust.<\/strong> Even though you\u2019re copying someone else, you shouldn\u2019t just \u201cset and forget\u201d with this method of investing. For example, data and statistics from ZuluTrade show that uninterrupted copy trading (mimicking a trader\u2019s move exactly without tinkering or making adjustments) can have a success rate of between 73% and 79%. This is pretty much a complete flip of the odds of retail investors who trade manually, who have roughly a 70% chance of losing money.<\/p><p>However, this means you\u2019ll need to copy the exact moves and there is still a fairly significant chance you can lose money. One interesting component is that shorter timeframes seem to perform better than longer timeframes (for example, 3 months of trading has a higher success rate than 12 months). So the longer you spend trading (rather than long-term investing), the more the odds of coming out on top swing against you.<\/p><h3>Advantages of copy trading<\/h3><p>Here\u2019s a quick look at the possible benefits of copy trading:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Minimal expertise.<\/strong> You can start copying trades with little or no investing experience (although this isn\u2019t advisable). But it can lower the barrier to entry for those looking to start trading.<\/li><li><strong>Diversification opportunities.<\/strong> Most platforms will let you copy traders investing in a range of assets and markets, so you could potentially diversify your approach by following and copying a variety of traders.<\/li><li><strong>Saves time.<\/strong> By spending some up front time researching the trader(s) to copy, you might be able to save yourself time that you would have spent researching trades to make yourself. However, using short-cuts with investing can sometimes lead to an unhappy ending.<\/li><\/ul><h3>Disadvantages of copy trading<\/h3><p>These are some of the important drawbacks you need to consider:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Use of derivatives.<\/strong> Copy trading usually involves derivatives, which are basically synthetic assets rather than real assets and can come with additional risks and complexities.<\/li><li><strong>Dangers of leverage.<\/strong> Some traders use leverage (borrowed money) to maximise positions, which can also magnify any potential losses.<\/li><li><strong>Lack of control.<\/strong> If you\u2019re copying someone else, by design you don\u2019t really get to give any input on the trades being made, even if you think something is a particularly bad or risky idea.<\/li><li><strong>Losing money.<\/strong> If you copy another trader, their losses are your losses. Their goal will be to make money, but unfortunately, there are no guarantees when it comes to investing or trading.<\/li><li><strong>Additional fees.<\/strong> Some platforms like eToro let you use its CopyTrader feature for free, but there can be additional fees involved (on top of regular trading fees, spreads, and platform fees) when using these copy tools.<\/li><\/ul><h3>Pros and cons of copy trading<\/h3><div class=\"u-grid\"><div class=\"u-grid__col u-1\/2@s\"><ul class=\"list-4\"><li>Ease of use (sometimes)<\/li><li>Access to the knowledge of expert traders<\/li><li>Automate your trades<\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"u-grid__col u-1\/2@s\"><ul class=\"list-12\"><li>Dependent on the decisions of others<\/li><li>Possible extra costs and fees<\/li><li>Market risks of trading can mean losing some or all of your money<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><h3>The traders people copy<\/h3><p>On the investing platform eToro, you\u2019ll see both full-time and part-time investors among the \u201cmost copied\u201d in its renowned CopyTrader programme, which lets novices shadow the moves of more experienced investors. Just before the coronavirus crisis started, I opened a virtual account on eToro, realised how easy it is and fell in love with the possibilities it offers.<\/p><h4>Q: Why did you start investing?<\/h4><h5>Jordenboer<\/h5><p>I had personally not built up a pension, so it was imperative that I took care of my financial future by becoming financially independent myself.<\/p><h5>Ingruc<\/h5><p>The main goal was (and is) to build wealth over time by putting surplus cash to good use.<\/p><p>For me the stock market always seemed like the better option for investing compared to other products such as savings accounts, insurances and pension products.<\/p><p>I find the corporate world fascinating and personally take great joy in seeing markets and single companies develop over time.<\/p><h5>Nezatron<\/h5><p>I have always been concerned about my money and savings. When I got my first student job I realised how much effort you must put in to earn a few bucks. I didn\u2019t want to spend it right away and later realised that if I don\u2019t do anything with my savings, money in the bank account will slowly lose its value. I started to look at possible solutions, and investing was the best option for me.<\/p><h4>Q: How much time do you dedicate to your investment portfolio daily?<\/h4><h5>Jordenboer<\/h5><p>I\u2019m currently a full-time eToro Popular Investor, dividing my time between following the markets, buying or selling stocks and studying for Level 4 Wealth and Investment Management which will help me become an eToro Elite Pro Popular Investor.<\/p><h5>Ingruc<\/h5><p>I am a full time investor, so I spend most of the day monitoring and analysing the markets. That usually means absorbing and sorting through a lot of different information, deciding what\u2019s relevant and how it might impact single stocks and my strategy. That\u2019s a full-time job, but luckily I really enjoy what I do.<\/p><h5>Nezatron<\/h5><p>After work in the laboratory, I dedicate several hours a day to my portfolio. I don\u2019t make changes to my portfolio every day, but I research and analyse different companies, macroeconomic events, and investing news. I also listen to several different podcasts and YouTube channels. I like to read books which are more focused on one topic and contain a lot of useful information. During each earnings season I regularly analyse earnings reports, which requires a lot of reading time.<\/p><h4>Q: What have you learned from your investing mistakes?<\/h4><h5>Jordenboer<\/h5><p>The most important thing I have learned is not to try and time the markets, but instead be invested as this will always result in profits in the long term. However, this is dependent on stock selection.<\/p><h5>Ingruc<\/h5><p>The good old adage \u201ctime in the market beats timing the market\u201d is certainly true for a long-term investor. Instead of trying to find the optimal entry point it\u2019s better to be invested constantly with a consistent strategy.<\/p><h5>Nezatron<\/h5><p>I have learned to trust myself, believe in my own research, and don\u2019t follow the herd. With that, I have grown as an investor and as a person.<\/p><h4>Q: Do you have any trading regrets?<\/h4><h5>Jordenboer<\/h5><p>The crypto market has evolved tremendously. Even though I don\u2019t trade crypto, I do regret not investing in it and seeing the evolution of digital payments and blockchain technology ten years ago.<\/p><h5>Ingruc<\/h5><p>Usually I don\u2019t have trading regrets. Of course, sometimes you see a stock going up, you remember you looked at the stock just some weeks ago but didn\u2019t buy it. There is a glimpse of regret in that moment. However, I am really digesting that very quickly, because in hindsight it\u2019s always easy to say \u201cI should have bought\u201d \u2013 but the fact is that I did not. And that decision to not buy at the time was based upon good reasons, so no need to be bitter about it.<\/p><h5>Nezatron<\/h5><p>I don\u2019t have any regrets. \u201cIf, if, if\u201d are in my opinion the most dangerous words in investing. If I had invested in Apple in 1980 I would be rich. Yes but you didn\u2019t, so go on and stick to your strategy.<\/p><h4>Q: What\u2019s the one thing you would say to someone starting out in investing?<\/h4><h5>Jordenboer<\/h5><p>Copy Popular Investors with part of your portfolio and start off trading some stocks yourself. Keep some spare cash to use for opportunities which arise. Add funds monthly to build up your wealth over time. And be patient\u2026..don\u2019t go for 50% profits in one month and don\u2019t quit after being down 3%.<\/p><h5>Ingruc<\/h5><p>Be curious, get involved in the markets, find out what kind of investor you want to be.<\/p><h5>Nezatron<\/h5><p>Explore, learn, and don\u2019t be afraid. Start reading, listen to podcasts, follow the news about world markets and do your own research. With all of that, you will shape your goals and develop a strategy that suits your needs. Don\u2019t be afraid to try something new; we are learning our whole life and it might be scary at the beginning, but this is not a reason not to try. It might be helpful to find yourself an experienced mentor who can guide you. It is easier if you have a reliable person beside you who can motivate and advise you when you feel lost.
