We\u2019ll explain them as best we can but it\u2019s certainly not the simplest or cheapest fee structure from a UK investing platform. Recently, Charles Stanley adjusted its fees making some cheaper, some more expensive and unfortunately \u2013 leaving in a layer of complexity.<\/p><p>Let\u2019s start with the platform fee. If you\u2019re investing in stocks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/share-trading\/best-investment-trusts\">investment trusts<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/share-trading\/exchange-traded-funds-etfs\">exchange-traded funds (ETFs)<\/a>, and most other investments \u2013 it\u2019s a 0.3% annual platform fee based on the size of your holdings. This is charged monthly and there\u2019s a \u00a35 monthly minimum and a \u00a350 monthly maximum. As an example, if you had a \u00a310,000 portfolio \u2013 this would cost you \u00a360 a year (\u00a35 a month).<\/p><p>Now, here\u2019s the first of many quirks \u2013 no matter the size of your portfolio, Charles Stanley will give you \u00a350 worth of trading credits to use every 6 months (on a use it or lose it basis). This is a welcome addition because the investing commissions are \u00a310 for most types of investments and \u00a34 for funds. <\/p><p>The only respite is the multi-asset funds which now have no commission to buy or sell. You can also pay no commission for funds (unit trusts and OEICs) if you set up a regular monthly investment. So at least these trading credits will soothe that sting.<\/p><p>For international investments, you\u2019ve got the high \u00a310 commission to pay and then either a foreign exchange (FX) fee or an \u201cinternational charge\u201d. This is basically just two ways to skin the same cat. If you\u2019re buying overseas investments you\u2019ll pay a 1% FX fee (that gets cheaper with trades over \u00a310,000). Or, if you\u2019re buying CREST Depository Interests (CDIs), which are basically UK securities that represent international securities, you\u2019ll pay the international charge (the same structure and cost as the FX fees) \u2013 even though these investments are denominated in pounds.<\/p><p>There are some other confusing perks too for \u201cDirect Investment\u201d clients. For example, a 6 month fee waiver if you transfer in \u00a3200,000 or more and a free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/pensions\/self-invested-personal-pensions\">self-invested personal pension (SIPP)<\/a> wrapper if you hold over \u00a330,000 in your retirement account (normally \u00a3100).<\/p><p>That\u2019s most of the basics covered, but there\u2019s more. If you want to invest in the range of UK bonds or gilts available on the platform, you can\u2019t trade them online so the telephone dealing charge of 1% will apply (with a \u00a325 minimum and \u00a3100 maximum fee). <\/p><p>There are also a number of \u201cmiscellaneous\u201d charges that can apply to customers in unique situations or for personal requests and you can check those out over at Charles Stanley, we\u2019re not detailing them here because they\u2019re not likely to be relevant for most investors \u2013 unless of course you still handle all your finances using a physical cheque book.<\/p><p>Thanks for bearing with us there, investing fees and costs aren\u2019t fun to begin with and Charles Stanley doesn\u2019t do a lot to ease the burden with all the added complexity.<\/p><p>High-net worth investors and those with large portfolios will find the best value here.
