With a stocks and shares ISA, your money is invested and the returns you make are also tax-free.<\/p><p>If you want to open a cash ISA, you should consider the following when comparing accounts:<\/p><ul><li><strong>The interest rate.<\/strong> You\u2019ll want to earn the highest interest rate possible, so shop around and compare deals carefully.<\/li><li><strong>The type of account.<\/strong> You can usually choose from easy access cash ISAs that let you access your money whenever you need to, or fixed rate ISAs that require you to leave your funds untouched for a year or more. Fixed rate ISAs tend to pay higher interest rates.<\/li><li><strong>Transfer options.<\/strong> Some cash ISAs let you transfer in funds from other ISAs you\u2019ve opened in the past.<\/li><li><strong>Flexibility.<\/strong> Some cash ISAs are known as flexible ISAs. This means you can withdraw money from your account and pay it back in during the same tax year without reducing your ISA allowance.<\/li><li><strong>Minimum opening balance.<\/strong> Check how much you need to open your cash ISA \u2013 this can vary from \u00a31 to \u00a35,000.<\/li><li><strong>Account management.<\/strong> You should also check how you can manage your account \u2013 whether that\u2019s in branch, over the phone or online. Be sure to pick an account that best suits your requirements.<\/li><\/ul><h3>Why choose ISAs for retirement?<\/h3><p>One of the main benefits of choosing an ISA for your retirement funds is that you won\u2019t pay tax on any of the interest earned. <\/p><p>This can be useful if you\u2019ve exceeded your personal savings allowance. This lets basic rate taxpayers earn up to \u00a31,000 in savings interest tax-free each year. Higher rate taxpayers can earn up to \u00a3500 in savings interest tax-free each year, while additional rate taxpayers have no personal savings allowance. <\/p><p>Stocks and shares ISAs can be particularly useful for longer term savings as they tend to offer better long-term returns than cash ISAs. But they are also higher risk and you could get back less than you\u2019ve paid in.<\/p><p>Just keep in mind you can only invest up to \u00a320,000 in ISAs each tax year.<\/p><h3>Which is better: ISAs or bonds?<\/h3><p>The main difference between ISAs and bonds is that you don\u2019t pay tax on the interest earned in an ISA, but you might if you have bonds (if you exceed your personal savings allowance).<\/p><p>If you pay money into a bond, you must leave those funds untouched for a set time \u2013 usually a year or more. During that time you earn interest on the money saved. As well as not being able to make withdrawals during the term of the bond, you also (usually) won\u2019t be able to add further funds to your account. <\/p><p>This is very similar to a fixed rate cash ISA, but the difference is you won\u2019t pay tax on the interest earned in an ISA. However, as mentioned, the maximum you can pay into an ISA each tax year is currently \u00a320,000.
