We look at the latest statistics on credit, debit and payment card fraud in the UK.<\/p><article class=\"luna-card luna-card--shadow\"><div class=\"luna-card__block\"><h3 class=\"luna-sectionTitle\">Credit card fraud statistics: Highlights<\/h3><ul><li>\u00a3551.3 million was lost to credit, debit and payment card fraud in the UK in 2023.<\/li><li>There were 2.73 million cases of payment card fraud in 2022.<\/li><li>The equivalent of every 1 in 20 adults experienced an instance of card fraud in 2023.<\/li><li>A quarter (25%) of all payment card fraud losses \u2013 worth \u00a3134.5 million \u2013 happened abroad in 2023.<\/li><li>Card ID theft cases were up by 74% year-on-year in 2023.<\/li><li>The average instance of card fraud results in a loss of \u00a3204.<\/li><li>The total number of card fraud cases is up by 109% since 2014.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/article><h3>How common is credit card fraud in the UK?<\/h3><p>There were 2.7 million cases of UK credit and debit card fraud in 2023 \u2013 this is the equivalent of every 1 in 20 adults experiencing an instance of card fraud. This means that almost a quarter of the value of all card fraud on UK-issues cards happens overseas.<\/p><p>The value of card fraud overseas peaked at over \u00a3200 million in 2016 but seems to have been gradually declining since then. <\/p><p>In 2022, Ireland was the top country for overseas fraud on UK-issued cards, with 1 in 5 (21%) instances occurring here.
