You can find fixed-rate bonds that last as little as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/savings-accounts\/fixed-rate-bonds\/6-month-fixed-rate-bonds\">6 months<\/a> or others that last for as long as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/savings-accounts\/fixed-rate-bonds\/best-5-year-fixed-rate-bonds\">5 years<\/a>. Here, we look at 18-month fixed-rate bonds.<\/p><h3>How do 18-month fixed rate bonds work?<\/h3><p>With an 18-month fixed-rate bond, you pay in a lump sum of cash and leave that money untouched for a term of 18 months. The interest paid on your savings is fixed for the term of the bond.<\/p><p>You won\u2019t usually be able to top up your funds during the term and how much you need to pay into your account initially will depend on the provider. Some bonds only require a deposit of \u00a3100, but others will ask for as much as \u00a35,000.<\/p><p>Withdrawals are not usually permitted during the 18-month term, but if they are, you will typically need to pay a penalty fee. Often this is a number of days\u2019 interest. Once the 18 months are up, your bond will mature and you can access your cash or move it to another account. <\/p><p>Bonds with a 18-month term will generally pay a better rate than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/best-1-year-fixed-rate-bonds\">1-year<\/a> (or shorter) terms but a worse rate than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/best-2-year-fixed-rate-bonds\">2-year<\/a> (or longer) terms.<\/p>\n\n<p>However, at the moment, you can actually get a better rate (6.25% vs 4.7%) on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/best-1-year-fixed-rate-bonds\">1-year term<\/a>. If you suspect that interest rates are likely to start to come down, then you may still prefer to \"lock in\" for 18 months, even if it's at a lower rate.<\/p>\n<h3>How to compare fixed-rate bonds<\/h3><p>When comparing fixed-rate bonds, it\u2019s worth keeping the following points in mind:<\/p><ul><li><strong>What interest rate will I earn?<\/strong> When looking for an 18-month fixed-rate bond, you\u2019ll want to hunt out the most competitive interest rate. Remember, this rate will be fixed for the term of the bond. Although you\u2019d usually expect an 18-month bond to have a better rate than a 12-month bond, and a worse rate than a 24-month bond, it\u2019s not a given. Realistically, 18 months is a bit of an \u201cin between\u201d term, and there\u2019s not as much competition between banks \u2013 some of which won\u2019t offer this term length as an option.<\/li><li><strong>What deposit is required?<\/strong> The initial deposit requirement will vary depending on the provider, so make sure you check to ensure you\u2019ll be able to meet this requirement.
