It gives a business the authority to take money from your bank account when the payment is due, and to set one up, you must complete a Direct Debit Mandate form online or on paper.<\/p><p>It\u2019s important to note that a direct debit is different to recurring a payment, which is also known as a Continuous Payment Authority (CPA). Rather than being pulled from a bank account, recurring payments are charged to a debit card or credit card until this arrangement is cancelled \u2013 this must be done directly with the organisation. <\/p><p>Recurring payments are often used for subscription services or to pay for high value goods or foreign currency. They often offer next day clearance, whereas direct debits can take a few days to clear. Although they are still regular payments, they are not the same as direct debits and therefore cannot be used to qualify for current account switching incentives and rewards. <\/p><p>You should also be aware that banks will often specify in the small print that any direct debits on the account must be \u201cactive\u201d to qualify for switching incentives. In other words, the direct debit(s) needs to go out each month. So if you have a direct debit that goes out quarterly or annually, it probably won\u2019t count.<\/p><h3>Direct debits you can set up<\/h3><p>Below is a list of some of the direct debits you can set up on your bank account to help you earn those switching rewards:<\/p><h4>Bills<\/h4><p>This is the core group of direct debits and includes your:<\/p><ul><li>Energy bill<\/li><li>Broadband and landline bills<\/li><li>Mobile phone bill<\/li><li>Water bill<\/li><li>Council tax<\/li><li>TV licence<\/li><\/ul><h4 id=\"charity\">Charitable direct debits<\/h4><p>If you regularly donate to charity, check whether you\u2019re doing this via direct debit. If you\u2019re not \u2013 perhaps you\u2019re doing it via payroll giving instead \u2013 you could consider switching to a direct debit payment to help you qualify for a current account. <\/p><p>If you need more direct debits, depending on the benefits you\u2019ll get from your chosen account, you could consider setting up further charity direct debits. You can usually do this for relatively small monthly amounts but consider whether it\u2019s worth it first.<\/p><h5>A list of popular charities you can set up a direct debit with<\/h5><ul><li>Cancer Research<\/li><li>WWF<\/li><li>Water Aid<\/li><li>British Heart Foundation<\/li><li>British Red Cross<\/li><li>Save the Children <\/li><li>RSPCA<\/li><li>RNLI<\/li><li>Oxfam<\/li><li>Macmillan Cancer Support<\/li><\/ul><h4>Savings\/investing contributions<\/h4><p>In some cases, you can also set up direct debits to send money to your savings account. This can be a great way of qualifying for a new current account without having to pay for another service. However, you\u2019ll need to do your research as not all savings accounts will accept direct debit payments. <\/p><h4>Using PayPal<\/h4><p>If you use PayPal to make a purchase, you\u2019ll usually find that the money is taken from your current account via direct debit. This gives you another option, but keep in mind that it\u2019s unlikely to be regular enough to qualify in many cases. A way round it is to use PayPal to pay for a regular service that doesn\u2019t allow direct debits, such as Spotify.<\/p><h4>Credit card direct debits<\/h4><p>If you regularly use a credit card, setting up a monthly direct debit will not only ensure you pay your bill on time, it could also count as one of your direct debits on your new current account. You\u2019ll need to make sure this payment is for at least the minimum monthly amount, but ideally set it to pay off the full balance each month.<\/p><h4 id=\"news\">More popular services<\/h4><ul><li>Newspaper subscription, eg the Guardian<\/li><li>The National Lottery<\/li><li>The Postcode Lottery<\/li><li>Gym membership<\/li><li>Magazine subscription, eg Good Housekeeping<\/li><li>Next Pay account<\/li><li>National Trust membership<\/li><li>AA breakdown cover<\/li><li>English Heritage membership<\/li><\/ul><h3>Set up a cheap direct debit<\/h3><p>If you\u2019re not switching your main bank account and you\u2019re struggling to set up enough direct debits to meet the switching or reward offer requirements, a number of cheap direct debit services now exist to help you.<\/p><p>50p Direct Debit, for instance, lets you set up a monthly recurring direct debit of 50p \u2013 you can even set up 2 separate ones if that helps you meet your requirement. Tiny Direct Debit is another option, but the payment is \u00a31 a month.<\/p><p>Although you won\u2019t be paying for a service, so you effectively lose the money, you can cancel these direct debits at any time. This means you may find it helpful to use one of these services for a couple of months to get your switching offer, and then cancel the direct debit(s) after that.
